Maa Behen: Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri take sexist swearing and give it a slipper treatment

Maa Behen: Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri take sexist swearing and give it a slipper treatment

Only last week, audiences witnessed Sacha Baron Cohen’s sarcastic takedown of patriarchy in Netflix’s Ladies First. The film follows a white male executive who treats the women around him like props. But when this chauvinistic, power-hungry man finds himself in an alternate world dominated by women, he is forced to experience the same sexism that he once subjected his female colleagues to. It is only when women dictate the terms to this ‘dictator’ that he begins to recognise his mistakes and make amends. Maa Behen stars Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga in lead roles. Not sabki pasand, and proud of it But the real world doesn’t function like that, does it? Here, women have to fight, struggle, and sometimes even deceive or lie to survive. And in extreme circumstances, they may have to become kidnappers. In Suresh Triveni’s Maa Behen, three so-called “abla naris” — Rekha (Madhuri Dixit) and her daughters Jaya (Triptii Dimri) and Sushma (Dharna Durga) — find themselves pushed to that very edge. Rekha, Jaya and Sushma have been battling …

Three women in a dark comedy that is bold and unapologetic

Three women in a dark comedy that is bold and unapologetic

‘Maa Behen,’ a rather derogatory slur used for generations as an abuse, now gets a comedic yet dark twist with Suresh Triveni‘s latest film. Madhuri Dixit plays Rekha, the mother, Triptii Dimri plays Jaya, the elder sister, while Dharna Durga plays Sushma, the younger one. The three take on the roles of maa and behens, respectively, to hide a death at their home. Rekha is the sultry neighbourhood lady, who has the entire colony’s men and boys drooling over her. After her husband dies early, she’s all by herself to take care of her daughter. Before you assume, no, she’s not the ‘abla naari’ one would expect. She’s instead a confident, knows her worth, and cares very less about what people think of her. Years later, she has a second illegitimate daughter with an unknown man, whom she genuinely loves.  Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here.
