Dhinidhi Desinghu made the world take notice of her talent by becoming the youngest Indian athlete, at 14, to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Indian swimming prodigy currently holds three national records and has secured 42 international medals. On Friday, the Bangalore swimmer was conferred with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, top civilian award for children in India, by the President of India Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. A total of 20 children from 18 States & Union Territories were conferred with the honour, of which nine were recognised for their achievements in the field of sport. The youngest Indian at the 2024 Paris Olympics Dhinidhi Desinghu was beaten by Charita Phanindranath in U17 girl’s 50m freestyle swimming at the School Nationals in Delhi on Tuesday. Desinghu clocked 27.05s to take the silver medal, 0.03s shy off Charita’s 27.02s in what was a shock result. Paris Olympians Dhinidhi Desinghu and Srihari Nataraj shone throughout the intense and exciting aquatics program at the National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand, winning nine gold medals each. The swimmers, representing Karnataka, won two gold medals each on the final day, helping the state grab a total of 22 gold medals from the swimming program, which incidentally was three better than the previous edition. Karnataka’s 14-year-old swimming sensation, Dhinidhi Desinghu, won her fourth gold at the 38th National Games in Dehradun on Friday. However, Karnataka could not retain its top spot, with Manipur surging to the lead. The northeastern state’s weightlifters continued to shine, with weightlifter Bindyarani Devi (women’s 55kg) breaking a national record. Bindyarani lifted a total of 201kg with 88kg (NR) in snatch and 113kg in Clean and Jerk. With nine gold medals, including one each from weightlifting and wushu, and a total of 19 medals, Manipur moved to the top. The state also secured 7 silver and 3 bronze medals. 14-year-old Indian swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu produced a record-breaking swim to clock the ‘Best Indian Time’ in the girl’s 100m freestyle event on her way to a fourth-place finish at the 11th Asian Group Aquatics Championships in the Philippines. Dhinidhi broke the previous record of 57.35s set by Kenisha Gupta, clocking a new Indian best time of 57.33s competing in the ‘C’ category at New Clark City in Capas, Philippines. The teenager’s performance was better than what senior Olympian Maana Patel (58.42s) and 21-year-old Shivangi Sarma (59.05s) could manage in the women’s 100m freestyle event.
