Irrfan Khan ‘performed badly’ in some films, says Piyush Mishra; believes Tigmanshu Dhulia served ‘everything on a platter’ to him | Bollywood News

2 min readChennaiApr 8, 2026 06:24 PM IST Irrfan Khan’s death in 2020 broke many hearts around the world. While many lamented his passing, some fans pointed out how the actor’s work was fully recognised only after his death. In a recent interaction, Piyush Mishra opened up about this debate. He refused to accept the notion that “there is no other actor like Irrfan” and also stated that he finds some of his performances “average.” Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Piyush was asked about Annu Kapoor’s statement that actors are often appreciated more after their death. The Gangs of Wasseypur actor disagreed and said, “I don’t think so, when he was alive, at that time also he was appreciated a lot.” When asked about people saying that there is no other actor like Irrfan, he responded, “I don’t believe this. Every period will have its own actors who will keep working. These are wasteful talks. He did very well in some performances – Haasil and Paan Singh Tomar. I developed a complex …

Jaya Bachchan saved ‘humiliated’ Tigmanshu Dhulia when locals in Allahabad threatened to blacken his face, parade him on a donkey: ‘I started crying’ | Bollywood News

Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia recently opened up about the trouble he faced while shooting for his debut film Haasil in his hometown Allahabad (now Prayagraj). The director revealed that the film’s depiction of student politics led to a strong backlash from local political figures, forcing him to seek help from Jaya Bachchan. Released in 2003, Haasil earned critical acclaim for its gritty portrayal of campus politics in Uttar Pradesh. The film also marked Dhulia’s first collaboration with Irrfan Khan, who later worked with him in acclaimed films such as Paan Singh Tomar and Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster. Featuring strong performances by Irrfan Khan, Ashutosh Rana, Jimmy Shergill the film became known for its raw portrayal of student politics in the Hindi heartland. ‘People thought I was showing the university in a bad light’ In a conversation with The Lallantop, Dhulia said that problem began almost immediately after filming the opening scene featuring Ashutosh Rana’s character. He said, “When I was shooting Haasil in Allahabad, the very first scene we shot was Ashutosh Rana’s entry. In the …

4 min readMumbaiFeb 19, 2026 08:10 AM IST A great deal of credit has rightly been given to films like Bandit Queen and Satya for transforming the landscape of Hindi cinema. Yet, if there is one film that truly came to define rooted storytelling, it would be Haasil, directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. The film featured Irrfan Khan in a role that firmly placed him on the map. He portrayed a character who could be described as an anti-hero rather than a conventional antagonist, a performance that is still regarded as one of his most hard-hitting turns on screen. However, Irrfan was not Dhulia’s original choice. In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, the filmmaker revealed that he had initially approached his longtime friend and then-rising star Manoj Bajpayee for the role. Manoj Bajpayee refused to play a villain “See honestly, I didn’t go to Irrfan initially. Because Satya had already released, so I went to Manoj Bajpayee and he had become a star. Manoj and I were very good friends, we still are. When I narrated …

Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia on new-age cinema trend: ‘Unnecessary gore, demon-like looks, hyper-musculine anti-heroes’

Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia on new-age cinema trend: ‘Unnecessary gore, demon-like looks, hyper-musculine anti-heroes’

Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia has major problems with the violence, bloodshed, hyper-musculinity and rough anti-hero looks of actors in most action-packed films today. Calling out heroes wearing demon-like looks in superhit films, he is surprised that they are doing well at the box office. Tigmanshu Dhulia at Koshala Literature Festival held in Lucknow “The problem with today’s films, which are being made in abundance and are being loved by the audience, is with the angry characters! These KGFs, Kantaras and all show too much violence and bloodshed. This maar-kaat started with Baahubali (2015) and is just growing,” says Tigmanshu. He adds, “Bematlab ki maar-kaat rahe hain, khoon baha rahe hain! And, in a series, such films are coming and are being liked by the audience.” Trying to decode their appeal, he says, “Probably, there is an anger in society and people are not able to vent it out, so they are maybe connecting with these films and liking them. I don’t understand the DNA of such films, but personally, I don’t like it at all.” The filmmaker …

Discussing the issue in a podcast ANI, Tigmanshu Dhulia said, “Aapko ticket thodi bech rahe hain picture ka, aapko parking ka ticket bech rahe hain, popcorn bech rahe hain, samosa bech rahe hain, kya kya tacos bech rahe hain, saath mein ticket bhi bech rahe hain. Did you know Shah Rukh Khan was served ‘ghatiya si chai’ by director Tigmanshu Dhulia? Filmmaker recalls what actually happened

Trigger Warning: This article mentions someone’s death. Tigmanshu Dhulia is today named among the ace directors who gave the industry films like Paan Singh Tomar and Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster. But like many artists, he also had a humble beginning. The filmmaker started by assisting Shekhar Kapur during his initial days in the industry. While recalling the good old days, he admitted serving ‘ghatiya si chai’ to Shah Rukh Khan. During his recent conversation with ANI, Tigmanshu Dhulia went down memory lane and recalled the time when Shekhar Kapur was making a film titled Maut Se Jo Darte Nahi with Shah Rukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Suniel Shetty. When they started writing the script of the film, SRK came to meet Kapur at his flat where Dhulia served him tea. Recalling what actually happened, the Haasil director stated that Mr. India director Shekhar Kapur requested him to make tea for them in a microwave. Back in 1994, Tigmanshu didn’t even know how to use the kitchen appliance. “Pehli bar maine microwave dekha hota kya hai. Phir …
