Kalinga Lancers defeat Ranchi Royals to win Men’s Hockey India League title

Kalinga Lancers were crowned champions of the Men’s Hero Hockey India League after defeating Ranchi Royals 3-2 in a tightly contested final at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Monday. Playing in front of home supporters, the Lancers produced a composed performance to secure the title. Alexander Hendrickx scored twice from penalty corners, while Dilpreet Singh added a crucial field goal for the Lancers. Ranchi Royals responded through Araijeet Singh Hundal and captain Tom Boon but fell just short in the closing moments. The final began at a high tempo, with both teams creating early chances inside the circle. Vedanta Kalinga Lancers struck first in the fourth minute when Hendrickx converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag-flick. Ranchi Royals responded quickly, equalising in the ninth minute as Araijeet Singh Hundal finished neatly after a long aerial pass from the left flank. The second quarter proved decisive. The Lancers applied sustained pressure and earned multiple penalty corners. In the 25th minute, Hendrickx’s initial effort was saved, but Dilpreet Singh reacted fastest to score from …

Never be unfit again: Dilpreet Singh’s mantra as he looks to make up for lost time

When a teenaged Dilpreet Singh made his international debut nearly eight years ago in 2018, he was touted as the next big thing in Indian hockey. Over the next few years, Dilpreet was a vital cog in the wheel for the then Manpreet Singh-led side and even scored twice during India’s historic bronze medal winning run at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. However, he fell out of favour soon after. Just the next year, he was dropped from the team altogether. Despite his world class poaching skills inside the shooting circle, fitness remained a major cause of concern for Dilpreet. He struggled to get proper game time as he fell down the pecking order, missing the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2023 home World Cup among other major events. “It was disappointing to train hard and still not be able to play,” Dilpreet told The Bridge, reflecting on that three-year period when he found himself out of the national team. It was only last year as India started building towards the new-Olympic cycle and the …

India rout Canada 14-3 to reach Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final

The Indian men’s hockey team marched into the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 with a commanding 14-3 victory over Canada in Ipoh on Saturday. The result ensured India finished at the top of the pool standings and booked a place in Sunday’s title clash against Belgium. India struck early through Nilakanta Sharma in the fourth minute, before Rajinder Singh doubled the lead six minutes later. Canada responded through a penalty corner conversion by Brendan Guraliuk in the 11th minute, but India regained control almost immediately. Jugraj Singh and Amit Rohidas found the net in quick succession to close the first quarter with a 4-1 advantage. With several senior players rested for the tournament, India’s younger core continued to impress in the second quarter. Rajinder added his second in the 24th minute, followed by goals from Dilpreet Singh and Jugraj, who extended the advantage to 7-1 before halftime. Canada made tactical adjustments after the break and earned a penalty stroke in the 35th minute, which Matthew Sarmento converted. The brief resistance did little …

India beat South Korea 1-0 in the opening match of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025

India beat South Korea 1-0 in the opening match of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025

India opened their 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Ipoh, Malaysia, on Sunday. A solitary strike from Mohammed Raheel in the final minute of the first quarter proved enough for a composed win in the tournament’s rain-hit opening fixture. The match, delayed by more than six hours due to persistent heavy rain, eventually began late in the evening. Despite the disrupted schedule, India settled quickly. Their breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Dilpreet Singh initiated a smart move down the right flank, creating space before delivering a precise pass for Raheel. The forward executed a clean, angled drag flick to put India ahead. South Korea responded with sustained possession phases but were repeatedly denied by India’s well-structured defensive unit. Goalkeeper interactions remained minimal as India maintained compactness in both midfield and backline, restricting clear scoring opportunities for the Koreans. India, fielding a second-string squad for this edition of the prestigious tournament, showed discipline in managing the pace of the game after taking the early lead. Their …

Soorma Hockey Club thumps Kalinga Lancers 5-3 to rise to 3rd spot

Soorma Hockey Club registered a hard-fought 5-3 victory against the Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League 2024-25 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Monday. Dilpreet Singh (5’) gave the Lancers the lead in the game but Prabhjot Singh (26’) restored parity for Soorma. Harmanpreet Singh (32’, 54’) and Nicolas Keenan (33’) extended Soorma’s lead with quickfire goals in the third quarter. However, Theirry Brinkman (44’) pulled a goal back towards the end of the quarter. Maninder Singh (51’) and Harmanpreet Singh found the back of the net to extend Soorma’s lead further and even though Gursahibjit Singh (56’) pulled a goal back in the dying minutes, Soorma walked away with three crucial points. Soorma dictated the tempo as the game began, making headways into the opposition half but the Lancers had the first shot of the game as Sanjay crossed the ball from the right wing and Aran Zalewski’s deflection forced Soorma goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch into action early. Minutes later, Dilpreet Singh received the ball on top of the circle and …
