Stray dog menace: Ground reality in Mohali far from SC directives | Chandigarh News

Stray dog menace: Ground reality in Mohali far from SC directives | Chandigarh News

Despite clear and repeated directions from the Supreme Court, Mohali continues to grapple with a growing stray dog menace, with little visible action on the ground. The failure of authorities to establish a dog shelter, even eight years after land was allotted, has raised serious concerns about public safety and administrative accountability. In 2018, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) allotted 2.10 acres near Industrial Area Phase 3 to the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) to set up a dog shelter. As per the plan, one acre was to be developed as a park and one acre as a dog centre, but no construction or groundwork has begun to date. As a result, the problem of stray dogs in the city has worsened, with dog-bite incidents steadily increasing. The issue has gained urgency in light of the apex court’s strict directions. Earlier, the top court had stressed large-scale sterilisation of stray dogs to control their population. More recently, it issued clear guidelines for the establishment of dog shelters and dog centres, underlining that public safety …

Sharmila Tagore: The ‘liberal’ CBFC head who found govt’s directives ‘absurd’; offered to resign because of Aamir Khan’s film | Bollywood News

Sharmila Tagore started her career in the movies when she was just a teenager and for decades, she continued to perform beautifully in front of the camera. But in the early 2000s, Tagore was assigned a new responsibility – to head the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Sharmila took office after Anupam Kher had just served for one year as the head, and as soon as she took office in 2004, Sharmila made it clear that she wasn’t here to be the morality police, which was often expected from the CBFC head. In the years that followed, films like Rang De Basanti, My Brother Nikhil, No One Killed Jessica, Omkara, among others, experienced a fairly smooth release, and while Sharmila tried to make the CBFC into a ‘certification body’ during her time, it still ended up being the ‘censor board’ in later years. In 2025, The Indian Express has extensively reported on ‘censorship raj’, where no meeting has been held in six months. Soon after Sharmila Tagore became the head, Onir’s My Brother Nikhil …

‘Unfeasible’: SC on national directives on mob lynching | Latest News India

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to issue nationwide directives for uniform compensation and monitoring cases of mob lynching and cow vigilantism, stating that such an approach would be “unfeasible” and might prove counterproductive to victims. The petition, filed in the wake of increasing instances of mob violence allegedly linked to cow vigilantism, sought enforcement of the court’s 2018 ruling in the Tehseen Poonawalla case (ANI) A bench of justices BR Gavai and K Vinod Chandran, hearing a petition filed by the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), observed that law enforcement and redressal mechanisms should be pursued through jurisdictional high courts rather than the apex court engaging in “micromanagement”. Manipur ethnic violence: 64 bodies handed over to families after SC directives

In a significant development following the Manipur ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in May, 64 bodies of victims from the Kuki and Meitei communities were handed over to their respective families under stringent security measures. The bodies, comprising 60 from the Kuki community and four from the Meitei community, had been stored in morgues across Manipur.
