Tarapur–Boisar gas leaks and key chemical disaster safeguards for your UPSC exam

Tarapur–Boisar gas leaks and key chemical disaster safeguards for your UPSC exam

Take a look at the essential concepts, terms, quotes, or phenomena every day and brush up your knowledge. Here’s your knowledge nugget for today. Officials say there is no single reason behind the recurring incidents but point to the heavy concentration of chemical industries in the region. 1. The oleum, or fuming sulphuric acid, reacted with air to release sulphur dioxide and other sulphur oxides, forming a dense white cloud that reduced visibility within the factory premises and surrounding areas. Rescue teams initially faced difficulty locating the exact source of the leak due to the thick haze. 2. Tarapur and Boisar together form one of Maharashtra’s oldest and largest industrial estates, housing a large number of chemical, pharmaceutical, and allied manufacturing units operating in close proximity. Because many hazardous processes take place within a relatively small area, the probability of accidents involving gases, chemicals or industrial spills increases. 3. Many of the factories in the area handle highly reactive or toxic substances such as oleum, chlorine, nitrogen derivatives, and other industrial gases. These materials require …

NASA Disasters Programme Uses Artificial Intelligence to Help Aid Response Efforts

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and open science by NASA has been reported to significantly advance disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts. According to the space agency, NASA’s Disasters Program, supported by the agency’s commitment to open science, has been developing innovative tools and datasets to assist in managing natural disasters like hurricanes. These tools aim to equip communities and emergency responders with accurate, timely data for informed decision-making, as highlighted by the programme’s application during Hurricane Ida in 2021. Hurricane Ida and NASA’s Contribution Hurricane Ida, which struck Louisiana on August 21, 2021, was among the most destructive hurricanes in the US history. While emergency teams worked on the ground, NASA’s Disasters Program utilised satellite-based models and tools to provide critical data. Reports indicate that information on soil moisture, precipitation, vegetation changes, and power outages was shared through the NASA Disasters Mapping Portal. This data enabled organisations to understand the storm’s impact and prioritise response strategies effectively. Innovative Use of AI in Disaster Assessment A notable application of NASA’s AI tools was the detection …
