Stalin on Friday (December 19, 2025) and thanked him for providing assistance to those affected by Cyclone Ditwah in the island country. Mr. Stalin had, on December 6, 2025, flagged off 950 tonnes of relief materials aboard two Indian Navy vessels from the Chennai and Thoothukudi ports to support people affected by the cyclone. Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, Ganesanathan Geethiswaran, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, and senior officials were among those present at the meeting. A Bailey bridge is a portable, prefabricated modular structure, commonly used in flood-hit areas to reconnect two separated regions. The system is likely to weaken into a low-pressure area by Thursday (December 4, 2025). As the circulation is slowly moving inland, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and four south coastal districts, including Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari, indicating heavy rainfall on Thursday. Chennai, however, will likely experience only light to moderate showers. Torrential rain The system brought rainfall to areas along its path as it drifted inland. In view of the heavy rainfall warning caused by Cyclone Ditwah, Education Minister A. Namachivayam announced that all government, government-aided, and private schools in Puducherry will be closed today. The statement said: “Due to heavy rain warning, all government and government-aided schools and private schools in Puducherry will be declared holiday tomorrow (03/12/25), Wednesday.” Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, as heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Ditwah hit the state. According to the red nowcast warning, the IMD predicted heavy rainfall spells of more than 15 mm per hour, accompanied by moderate thunderstorms with maximum wind speeds of 40-60 kmph. India’s medical aid in the wake of the damage caused by cyclone Ditwah arrived in Sri Lanka on Wednesday (December 3, 2025), the Sri Lankan President’s office said in a statement. The supplies included advanced medical equipment and field hospitals. “An Indian Air Force C-17A aircraft carrying urgent medical assistance arrived in Sri Lanka last evening (December 2, 2025). The consignment comprised critical medicine, advanced medical equipment and deployable field facilities to support the country’s ongoing rescue and relief operations,” the statement said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the deep depression, the remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, currently centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, has now slowly started to move northwards at a speed of 10 kmph in the past six hours. Cyclone Ditwah weakened into a deep depression late Sunday, but not before leaving a trail of destruction across Sri Lanka and triggering widespread rainfall and disruptions across Tamil Nadu and adjoining coastal regions. The system hovered over the southwest Bay of Bengal and passed within 20 kilometers of the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastline by early Monday, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). The weakening storm follows a catastrophic landfall in Sri Lanka, where the death toll climbed to 334, with more than 300 people still missing, local disaster management authorities said.
