Jeo Baby, Divya Prabha open up about their latest movie Ebb; director says The Great Indian Kitchen’s vision ‘came to me over time’ | Malayalam News

Jeo Baby, Divya Prabha open up about their latest movie Ebb; director says The Great Indian Kitchen’s vision ‘came to me over time’ | Malayalam News

Director Jeo Baby and actor Divya Prabha are currently revelling in the overwhelmingly positive response their latest feature film, Ebb, has been receiving at the 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). An extremely bold psychological drama that explores monogamy and non-monogamy, as well as love and the possessiveness it entails, Ebb was one of the most anticipated movies slated for a worldwide premiere at the festival. While part of the hype stemmed from Jeo’s return to the director’s chair after the widely acclaimed Mammootty-starrer Kaathal – The Core, Ebb was also eagerly awaited because of Divya’s presence, since she has been riding a wave of success with back-to-back impactful performances in notable films, including director Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, which won the Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Although she has appeared in only five films since 2022, including Ebb, each has been distinct from the others, wherein Divya Prabha played unique and demanding characters with full commitment, earning praise from all quarters. A look at some of the …

Ebb movie review: Jeo Baby, Divya Prabha’s film deals a blow to male hypocrisy and performative wokeness, but doesn’t stop there | Movie-review News

Jeo Baby’s Ebb movie review: There aren’t many filmmakers in Malayalam cinema, or perhaps in India itself, who expose male hypocrisy the way Jeo Baby does: brutally, uninhibitedly, and astutely. His latest feature film, Ebb, which premiered at the 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), is yet another example of this. However, this time he has opted for a far more raw portrayal and has ensured an exploration of its psychological dimensions as well, along with the social conditioning that contributes to it. At the same time, the movie also anatomises the concepts of monogamy and non-monogamy, their practical implications, and, to an extent, performative wokeness, too. Known for his artworks and ‘nonconformist’ mindset and lifestyle, Adarsh (Jeo) lives in an apartment with his partner, Maria (Divya Prabha). Despite being head-over-heels in love with each other, they are in an open relationship and have other partners as well. Although she was initially not okay with Adarsh’s non-monogamous lifestyle, it is revealed that Maria eventually came to terms with it — thanks to Adarsh himself, …

All We Imagine As Light is Magical

All We Imagine As Light is Magical

In a densely populated “mahanagar” like Mumbai people long for closure. Everything we see or imagine is blue. Perhaps the external blues of the film mirrors the internal blues in the minds and hearts of the two Malayalee nurses Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and Anu (Divya Prabha). The cook in the hospital Chhaya Kadam joins this kinship. Each has a story to tell. Prabha who hasn’t heard from her husband in Germany and longs for him. And won’t reciprocate to a gentle doctor at work. Anu in a furtive affair with a soft hearted Muslim boy Shiaz steals kisses in a parking lot with him. While Chhaya’s troubled by land sharks and builders force her to vacate her home. In coping with the harsh realities of living there may be moments of lyricism. The cinematography deftly captures the claustrophobia and poetry of the maximum city. In a mix of magical realism and epiphanies, the three women find closure by the sea side. The magical Kani Kusruti with her haunting eyes and fire within on low simmer …

Ariyippu actors on how they lived with migrant workers to prepare for roles

Director Mahesh Narayanan is known for taking up different, rooted issues from the heart of Kerala in his feature films. His latest film, Ariyippu (The Declaration) is a little different. For one, it is set in Noida instead of Kerala and features dialogues in Hindi and Tamil apart from Malayalam, with lots of Hindi actors as well. The director and his two stars–Kunchacko Boban and Divya Prabha–spoke to Hindustan Times about the film prior to its release. Excerpts: Ariyippu is different from the routine Malayalam film as much of the dialogue is in Hindi. It is set in north India as well. Is that a creative decision or a commercial one, to widen the film’s reach? Mahesh: This is the only film of mine where I haven’t considered the commercial aspect. It is entirely different from what I have tried with my last three films. Most of my films are dependent on migration. I love this concept of setting characters who are alien to a specific region and they explore it among themselves. In this …

Ariyippu Trailer: Kunchacko Boban Malayalam Movie to Stream December 16 on Netflix

Ariyippu, the upcoming Mahesh Narayanan film starring Kunchacko Boban in the lead, just got a trailer and release date. After making rounds in the film festival circuit in August, Netflix bought the rights to it, making it a platform exclusive, available for streaming from December 16. Set in New Delhi, amidst the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film follows a struggling couple — working at a medical gloves factory — with dreams of migrating out of the country for a better life. But when an old video surfaces among the workers, it threatens to ruin their relationship, reputation, and jobs. The trailer for Ariyippu opens with an introduction to the Malayali couple’s lives, starting with factory worker and wife Reshmi (Divya Prabha), who not only lacks experience speaking Hindi but is under constant scrutiny from her boss. “Why are you wearing a ring?”, Faisal Malik’s unnamed character questions her as a standard protocol, to avoid contamination issues. “Sir, it won’t come off. Please tell him, sir,” she replies in her native language, while we’re …
