New Delhi was ranked the world’s most polluted city on Friday morning, November 1, a days after Diwali celebrations pushed air quality to hazardous levels, according to Swiss firm IQAir. Delhi’s air quality deteriorated to the higher end of the “very poor” category and was likely to inch close to the “severe” zone later on Friday as the annual winter ban on firecrackers was flouted again amid Diwali celebrations. Plumes of a toxic cocktail of pollutants and heavy metals enveloped the city with hourly PM 2.5 levels shooting up in parts of the city to around 31 times the permissible standards for the ultrafine particles. Delhi’s air quality is likely to be the worst post-Diwali since 2021. (ANI) The average air quality index (AQI) was 361 (very poor) at 7am on Friday compared to 328 (very poor) at 4pm on Thursday. Several areas in the capital saw the air quality of over 300 points while some also saw the AQI above 350. The AQI had improved to the ‘Poor’ category on Saturday, however, it again slipped to the ‘Very Poor’ section the next day and continued to remain so on Monday morning.
