RG Kar: Junior doctors’ hunger strike enters 9th day, others on ‘symbolic fast’ | Kolkata News

The hunger strike by junior doctors of West Bengal to press for their demands following the RG Kar hospital incident entered the ninth day on Sunday, when people are holding a “symbolic fast” at various parts of the state to express solidarity with the agitators. Three of the junior doctors who were observing ‘fast unto death’ in Kolkata and Siliguri city in the northern part of the state have so far been hospitalised after their condition deteriorated. “Their conditions are worsening but the state administration remains unmoved,” a leader of the agitating Junior Doctors Forum said. Meanwhile, a group of former students of R G Kar hospital have reached the medical establishment for a symbolic fasting of 12 hours to express solidarity with the students on hunger strike. However, they faced resistance from the CISF personnel who were on security duty at the hospital following a court order. The protests, against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor have been ongoing for over a month. Agitating junior doctors in Kolkata on Tuesday rejected West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s invitation for talks, and continued their stir outside the state Health Department the entire night. The doctors took exception to the language of the email sent to them, to resolve the impasse over the RG Kar hospital issue. Further, the doctors conveyed that although “doors remain open” for talks with the state’s highest authorities, they would continue with their agitation until their demands are met. Give Reports On Security Measures In Medical Institutions: Centre To States

The states have to take remedial and appropriate action given the exigencies of the situation. The Union Health Ministry has urged the states to submit action-taken reports on the immediate and short-term security measures implemented in medical institutions for doctors and healthcare workers. Referring to a virtual conference held on August 28, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra, in a letter sent to the chief secretaries and directors general of police (DGPs) of all the states and Union territories on Tuesday, highlighted the key security measures discussed at the meeting and requested them to submit the action-taken reports before September 10. The key points highlighted at the meeting included the identification of high-risk establishments as part of which each territory or district has to identify the hospitals with high footfall and consider those as high-priority establishments for security improvements.
