Russia’s Elite Is Souring on the War. Putin Doesn’t Seem to Care.

Russia’s inability to break through the stalemate in Ukraine is becoming so evident that significant voices in the Russian establishment have publicly started to call for an end to the conflict. (AP Photo/Pavel Bednyakov) (AP Photo/Pavel Bednyakov) The big question is whether President Vladimir Putin will acknowledge this reality and abandon his aspiration to extinguish Ukrainian independence. So far, there is no sign that, in the fifth year of Europe’s bloodiest conflict in generations, he is ready to climb down from the original objectives of his “special military operation.” But that could change if the tide of war turns further in Kyiv’s favor. The calls don’t just come from the business elites and more liberal parts of the Russian establishment. Some of Russia’s best known hawks have also become much more open in expressing a belief that Moscow simply doesn’t have the capacity to achieve an outright victory against Ukraine. One of those is …

Mere demand for loan repayment doesn’t amount to abetment of suicide: Bombay High Court | Legal News

3 min readMumbaiJun 4, 2026 05:42 PM IST The Bombay High Court has quashed an FIR registered against six people, holding that mere demands for loan repayment cannot be a proximate cause of abetment of suicide in the absence of wilful instigation or conspiracy. The court noted that while the police had registered a case alleging that a retired teacher killed himself by consuming poison because of harassment over loan repayments, the postmortem report and chemical analysis showed that he had died of a heart attack and that no poison was detected in his body. Justice Ranjitsinha R Bhonsale, sitting at the Kolhapur circuit bench, passed a ruling last month on an application filed by six persons seeking the quashing of a 2022 FIR registered against them under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 306 (abetment of suicide) and subsequent proceedings pending before a magistrate’s court. Advocate Rupesh Bobade, appearing for the six people, argued that no proximate cause linked them to any act of instigation or abetment. Despite this, “shockingly and with mala fide intent”, …

After Elon Musk, Greeks feel Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey doesn’t sound Greek to them | Hollywood News

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk may have his own reasons of calling out Christopher Nolan’s “anti-white racism” for casting Black actor Lupita Nyong’o as the Helen of Troy in his upcoming ancient epic The Odyssey, a film adaptation of the text by ancient Greek poet Homer.  But his concerns of the lack of Greek representation in the film have now found resonance in people from Greece itself. A guest contributor in the Greek City Times called out Nolan’s ignorance of their people in a recent open latter.  “Greek people did not disappear after the age of myth. Greek culture was not frozen in classical marble. Greek language was not extinguished in antiquity. We are still here,” they wrote, adding, “For more than 3,000 continuous years, Greek identity has persisted through transformation rather than disappearance.” “At every stage, something essential remained unbroken: language, memory, and cultural continuity. Greek is still spoken today, the oldest continuously surviving language in Europe. Not reconstructed. Not revived. But lived. That continuity matters when stories like The Odyssey are retold,” the author argued. …
