Centre sets timeline for disposing living donor transplant applications

Representational file image. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement The Union Government has set a timeline of six to eight weeks for health authorities in the States/Union Territories to decide on applications seeking living donor organ transplantation. The decision follows a Delhi High Court order in January, which directed the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to prescribe timelines for steps in the process of considering an application pertaining to living donor transplantation by the authorisation committee. Notifying the timelines, the Ministry requested Health Secretaries of States/UTs to follow the guidelines as it would immensely help in expediting the decision-making process. A day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had received electoral bonds worth nearly Rs 60 crore from Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals director Sarath Chandra Reddy following his arrest in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, AAP national secretary Pankaj Gupta wrote to BJP president J P Nadda, asking him to “bring out the truth in public”. Reddy turned an approver in the case last year, and was granted a bail. Electoral bond purchase patterns show that before Reddy’s arrest, bonds bought by Aurobindo Pharma were encashed by political parties including Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and BJP. Following this arrest and turning an approver, the bonds were en-cashed only by the BJP. In his letter, Gupta asked Nadda to reveal the relationship between Reddy and the political party and tell the public why the party took Rs 60 crore from him. During 2018-2019, leading to the Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK was struggling to maintain its political legacy while preparing for a significant electoral battle. In the days preceding the polls, the party’s electoral bond receipts spiked, primarily due to CSK’s contributions, and notable contributions from Gopal Srinivasan of TVS Group. According to the latest data made public, the AIADMK received 38 electoral bonds, including 29 from the CSK and 5 from TVS’s Srinivasan, which were credited on April 15, 2019. The AIADMK had received ₹6.05 crore through the electoral bond route, with the majority of the contributions coming from Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd (The Directors of India Cements Ltd.). All these funds through electoral bonds were received between April 2, and April 4, 2019, in two days. The party did not receive any electoral bonds in subsequent years. The CSK Cricket Ltd. had donated ₹5 crore in all. The party received ₹1 crore from the Coimbatore-based Lakshmi Machine Works Limited and ₹5 lakh from an individual Gopal Srinivasan of Chennai, according to the information shared by it with the Secretary of the Election Commission India’s Election Expenditure Division.
