Bologna Create Club History, Pile More Misery On Struggling Borussia Dortmund In UEFA Champions League

Bologna Create Club History, Pile More Misery On Struggling Borussia Dortmund In UEFA Champions League

Borussia Dortmund’s struggles continued on Tuesday after the troubled Bundesliga outfit fell to a 2-1 defeat at Bologna which dented their hopes of direct qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League. Goals in a matter of seconds in the second half from substitutes Thijs Dallinga and Samuel Iling-Junior gave Bologna their first ever win in the modern version of Europe’s elite club competition and handed Dortmund their fourth straight defeat in all competitions. Last season’s finalists Dortmund, who opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Serhou Guirassy‘s classy chipped penalty, are 13th on 12 points, one point from the top eight with other teams set to complete the penultimate round of league phase matches on Wednesday. Tuesday’s defeat piled more pressure on under-fire coach Nuri Sahin even though his players showed their support by joining him in a group hug after Guirassy netted his seventh goal in as many Champions league matches this season. “I think we will sit down together tonight or tomorrow in Dortmund. Right now the game …

Borussia Dortmund Beaten By Eintracht Frankfurt, Could Drop Out Of Top 10 In Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund Beaten By Eintracht Frankfurt, Could Drop Out Of Top 10 In Bundesliga

Eintracht Frankfurt overcame the imminent departure of in-form Omar Marmoush to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at home on Friday, heaping more misery on the slumping visitors. Frankfurt, who cut Manchester City target Marmoush from the matchday squad just hours before kickoff, were clinical and controlled. Striker Hugo Ekitike put Frankfurt in front early and Dortmund had few clear chances despite dominating control of the ball. In stoppage time, Oscar Hojlund took advantage of a Dortmund mistake in midfield, winning possession and running 40 metres to slide the ball past a helpless Gregor Kobel. “We know what we had in Omar,” Frankfurt’s Mario Goetze told DAZN. “An incredible player, a great character. It’s always a shame when a player leaves, but the team did well against Dortmund today.” The result means Dortmund, who played in the Champions League final in June, have lost their past three and have just one victory in their last six games. They could fall to as low as 11th depending on results this weekend and are 11 points behind …

Bayer Leverkusen Win 5-Goal Thriller vs Borussia Dortmund, Heat Up Bundesliga Title Race

Bayer Leverkusen Win 5-Goal Thriller vs Borussia Dortmund, Heat Up Bundesliga Title Race

Patrik Schick scored a first-half brace as Bayer Leverkusen won 3-2 at a flu-hit Borussia Dortmund on Friday, closing the gap to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to one point. Already struck by an injury crisis, illness ripped through Dortmund’s defence, with centre-backs Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck, along with left-back Ramy Bensebaini, ruled out just hours before kick-off as the Bundesliga restarted from the winter break. The defending champions took advantage of Dortmund’s inexperienced defence early, scoring through Nathan Tella after just 25 seconds before Patrik Schick added another on the eight-minute mark. English winger Jamie Gittens pulled one back but Schick restored Leverkusen’s two-goal lead shortly afterwards. A late Serhou Guirassy penalty gave Dortmund hope but Leverkusen held on for their ninth straight win in all competitions, turning up the heat on Bayern, who travel to Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday. “I’ll be honest, we’re not looking at Bayern, we’re focused on ourselves and we’re on the right track,” Leverkusen’s Granit Xhaka told DAZN. Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso benched in-form midfielder Florian Wirtz …

Three And Easy As Borussia Dortmund Move Into Bundesliga Top Six

Three And Easy As Borussia Dortmund Move Into Bundesliga Top Six

Borussia Dortmund scored three goals in a devastating five-minute spell to beat Wolfsburg 3-1 and end the year in the top six of the Bundesliga. Dortmund came into this game without a win in their previous three league outings but produced some stylish attacking moments to blow Wolfsburg away on the road. Dutchman Donyell Malen got things moving, turning in Ramy Bensebaini’s corner from close range. The visitors doubled their lead through the impressive young Germany star Max Beier, who met Julian Brandt‘s through ball with a sublime first-time finish with the outside of his right foot.  Beier turned provider just two minutes later, cutting back a low cross for an unmarked Brandt to find the bottom corner.  Wolfsburg were stunned, having conceded in the 25th, 28th and 30th minutes and the rest of the contest was a damage limitation exercise for Ralph Hasenhuettl’s side, although they pulled one back in the second half through Denis Vavro.  Dortmund had Pascal Gross sent off just after the hour but it didn’t threaten to derail …

Harry Kane Double Takes Bayern Munich Past Union Berlin, Borussia Dortmund Beat Leipzig

Harry Kane Double Takes Bayern Munich Past Union Berlin, Borussia Dortmund Beat Leipzig

Harry Kane scored twice and set up another as Bayern Munich moved three points clear at the top of the German Bundesliga with a 3-0 home win over Union Berlin on Saturday. The England captain put Bayern ahead from the spot on 15 minutes after Union’s Benedict Hollerbach brought down Michael Olise on the edge of the box. Kane turned provider just before half-time, tapping the ball into Kingsley Coman‘s path, the France forward blasting in over Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.  Kane added another after 51 minutes, eagerly getting to a loose ball inches ahead of teammate Jamal Musiala to complete his brace. Despite two consecutive Champions League losses at Aston Villa and Barcelona, Bayern have now scored 16 without conceding in their past four games against German opposition.  “We’ve not started the Champions League well, so the pressure is on in every Champions League game now,” Kane said.  “I think if we use the confidence that we’ve played the last few games with, we can cause any team a lot of problems.” …

Simmering Jude Bellingham Set For Borussia Dortmund Reunion In Champions League

Simmering Jude Bellingham Set For Borussia Dortmund Reunion In Champions League

Jude Bellingham‘s first season at Real Madrid started with a glut of goals and ended with a dream double, but his second is yet to take off. The England international faces his former side Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu in a rematch of last season’s Champions League final, which Bellingham and Los Blancos triumphed in to win the competition for a record 15th time. The 21-year-old has shown signs of frustration in his sophomore year at Madrid, tasked with more defensive responsibility in midfield than at many times last season following the arrival of French superstar Kylian Mbappe. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti used the hard-working Bellingham on the right of midfield in a 2-1 La Liga win at Celta Vigo on Saturday, another new role for the 103 million euro ($112 million) man. Bellingham started last season as a key figure in the centre of Madrid’s attack, scoring 10 goals in his first 10 games across La Liga and the Champions League. Thrust into the position after Karim Benzema …

Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull Decision ‘Ruined Life’s Work’ Say Dortmund Fans

Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull Decision ‘Ruined Life’s Work’ Say Dortmund Fans

Borussia Dortmund fans have reacted with anger and frustration after former coach Jurgen Klopp’s announcement he will take over as head of football operations at Red Bull. The energy drink company, which owns Dortmund’s Bundesliga rival RB Leipzig along with teams in Salzburg and New York, made the surprise announcement on Wednesday, with the former Liverpool coach starting his role in January. Klopp became a local hero in Dortmund, delivering two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup during his seven years at the club while also taking them to the 2013 Champions League final. The Dortmund fanzine Schwatzgelb, however, said that Klopp had destroyed his reputation and “torn it down with a bang”. It also took issue with Klopp’s self-label of ‘the normal one’, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Jose Mourinho’s declaration he was ‘a special one’ on arriving at Chelsea. “The normal one, unfortunately (is) normal on all levels. Normal like everyone else in this dirty business,” the magazine wrote. “Jurgen Klopp’s decision to support Red Bull has ruined his life’s work, at …

Last-Gasp Victor Boniface Gives Bayer Leverkusen Victory, Stuttgart Outclass Borussia Dortmund

Victor Boniface struck a stoppage-time winner to give Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen a thrilling 4-3 win over Wolfsburg on Sunday, while Borussia Dortmund were outclassed in a 5-1 hammering at Stuttgart. In a seesaw encounter, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg were locked at 3-3 from the 48th minute. Wolfsburg were then reduced to 10 men in the dying stages when Yannick Gerhardt sunk his studs into Jeremie Frimpong’s calf. Boniface, who came on with 22 minutes remaining, collected a pass before pivoting on the spot and shooting home to snatch the German champions another late victory, providing a perfect boost ahead of next week’s trip to Bayern Munich. Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka was far from pleased with the win, calling the result “a giant wake-up call — none of us can be satisfied with the game today. “We can’t keep going with performances like that. We can’t defend so naively. Sure, we scored four but we can’t do that every weekend.” Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso had named a heavily changed line-up from the side which …

New Champions League format: Why PSG has the toughest draw? | Football News

“Football and our lives are managed by memories,” Cristiano Ronaldo said at the Champions league draw in Monaco. The UEFA would hope that the new format of the league would produce plenty of those as after months of buildup, UCL dived headfirst into unchartered territory as the familiar group stage of the tournament was relegated to the pages of the past and replaced with a swanky league model consisting of 36 teams. With a computer deciding the draw, replacing the earlier tradition of the names of the teams being picked from glass bowls manually, the Champions League went all digital for the new season. And as promised by UEFA, the new format did throw up some mouthwatering clashes from the get go with huge names like Real Madrid taking on Liverpool, Manchester City facing off against Juventus and Bayern Munich locking horns with Barcelona. 🚨🏆 Champions League complete draw. pic.twitter.com/PdifbQf71T — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 29, 2024 Defending champions Real Madrid will take on Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan while Manchester City will be …
