Apple blocks Fortnite’s App Store return as downloads fail in Europe

Fortnite maker Epic Games has announced that Apple has blocked the game’s return to iOS. Following the rejection, Fortnite is no longer available on iPhones and iPads even in the European Union, where it had previously been available to download through the Epic Games Store. “Apple has blocked our Fortnite submission so we cannot release to the US App Store or to the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union,” the company posted on the official Fortnite X account. “Now, sadly, Fortnite on iOS will be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it.” The Verge has confirmed that the game is no longer available to download on iOS from the Epic Games Store or the alternative marketplace AltStore PAL in the EU, where it had previously been available. It’s not yet clear if Apple blocked the game’s availability through those stores, or if Epic itself chose to make it unavailable. We’ve reached out to both Apple and Epic for comment. This week Epic CEO Tim Sweeney announced that the company had pulled its previous …

US music subscriptions cross 100 million as digital downloads drop

US music subscriptions cross 100 million as digital downloads drop

Business is still booming for music streaming services, which crossed the 100 million US subscriber mark in 2024, according to the Record Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) latest revenue report. Overall sales were also bolstered by physical media, which is growing at a slightly faster rate than digital, thanks in large part to continually increasing vinyl sales. “Paid subscriptions, ad-supported services, digital and customized radio, social media platforms, digital fitness apps and others grew 4% to a record high $14.9 billion in revenue,” writes the RIAA. That’s about half a billion dollars more than the previous year’s take. Meanwhile, vinyl, which experienced a 7 percent growth and has now outsold CDs for the third consecutive year, pulled in $1.4 billion of an overall $2 billion spent on physical media. CD revenue was up by a percent, earning $541 million for the year. Digital downloads were down by 14.9 percent versus last year and make up just two percent of the overall take. Amazon will stop allowing Kindle book downloads to your PC soon

Amazon will stop allowing Kindle book downloads to your PC soon

Starting on February 26th, 2025, Amazon is removing a feature from its website allowing you to download purchased books to a computer and then copy them manually to a Kindle over USB. It’s a feature that a lot of Kindle users are probably not aware of, given books can be more easily sent to devices over Wi-Fi, but it’s especially useful for backing up purchases or converting them to other formats compatible with non-Kindle e-readers. There are a few reasons why some Kindle users might miss this feature. It’s useful if you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi network, and although it’s a tedious process since purchased books can only be downloaded one at a time, there’s some peace of mind in knowing you have offline copies of all your books. It doesn’t happen frequently, but as Good e-Reader points out, Amazon has occasionally removed books from its online store and remotely deleted them from Kindles or edited titles and re-uploaded new copies to its e-readers. In 2009, the company removed copies of George Orwell’s …

Microsoft Finds Major Security Flaw ‘Dirty Stream’ in Android Apps Totalling Billions of Downloads

Microsoft discovered a major security vulnerability in multiple Android apps last week that could be exploited to gain unauthorised access to apps and sensitive data on the device. Interestingly, this security flaw does not come from the system codes, but an improper usage of a particular system by developers that can lead to loopholes prone to exploitation. Notably, the flaw has been highlighted to Google, and the tech giant has taken steps to make the Android app developer community aware of the issue. In a post on its Security Blog, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team stated, “Microsoft discovered a path traversal-affiliated vulnerability pattern in multiple popular Android applications that could enable a malicious application to overwrite files in the vulnerable application’s home directory.” The researchers also highlighted that the vulnerability was spotted in several apps in the Google Play Store that had a combined total of more than four billion installations. This vulnerability emerges when a developer incorrectly uses Android’s content provider system, which is designed to secure data exchange between different apps on a …

Threads App Sees Rise in Downloads, Competitor X Falls in Top Downloaded Apps List: Report

Threads was launched by Meta’s Instagram in July 2023. It is a microblogging platform, similar to X (formerly Twitter). Within the first five days of its launch, the application saw 100 million registered users. However, the platform struggled to retain regular users on the text-based app after the initial rush. Since then the company has introduced several new features on the application aiming to enhance user experience. Threads appears to be gaining its footing back in the game as it saw an increase in the number of new downloads, while competitor X took a tumble. An app intelligence firm Appfigures claimed in an analysis that Threads had 12 million new downloads on Apple’s App Store and 16 million on Google Play in December 2023. This resulted in the application ranking at number 4 and number 8, respectively on the Most Downloaded Apps list drawn up by the firm. Combined, Threads ranked at number 6 on the list of new downloads. Threads currently has an estimated 160 million users, according to an online tracker, which notes that it uses “an …

Hrithik Roshan & Deepika Padukone’s Fighter Has Leaked Online ( Photo Credit – Viacom18 Studios / YouTube ) Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone’s newly released film Fighter has fallen prey to piracy on day one itself. The war drama helmed by Siddharth Anand leaked online on the first day of release and is available for download in HD print. These pirated versions are available on various torrents and websites. Will Fighter Leak Affect Fighter Box Office Collection? However, while the entire film has leaked in HD quality, the box office collection of the film might not be impacted by this. In 2023, all the box office blockbusters were leaked online on the day of their release, but trends suggest that the much-aware audiences decided to go against piracy and watch the film in the theaters. From Jawan to Leo, all the films were available for download, but people preferred enjoying them in cinemas. We are sure even you are the same aware audience who were responsible enough to buy their own set of tickets and …

Apple Plans to Review Sideloaded iOS Apps, Charge Developers for Downloads Outside App Store: Report

Apple is expected to enable support for sideloading apps on iOS by March 6 to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), and details of the company’s plans to deal with the changes are now emerging. While the company is yet to announce when support for installing applications outside the App Store will be allowed in the EU, a report states that the company will set up processes to review — and possibly charge developers for — these apps. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple plans to enable support for sideloading iOS apps in the EU but will also implement new methods to review apps that are installed outside the App Store. While the iPhone maker currently has full control over how apps are distributed on its smartphones — including vetting and reviewing individual app updates — that is set to change in March when users in the EU will be able to install applications outside the App Store. It is currently unclear how Apple will restrict apps that are not distributed …

Podcast downloads are down (again) thanks to iOS 17

Apologies for sounding like a broken record, but the numbers are down again. This time by a lot, although that is not unusual for the end of the year. Podtrac reports that, among the top 20 publishers, downloads fell 19 percent month over month and down 24 percent year over year. The report states that the drop is “due largely to modified download behavior by iOS 17 as it continues to be adopted by podcast listeners.” In September, Apple introduced iOS 17, which included a small change that has had a big impact on downloads. It used to be that if you subscribed to a show, forgot about it for a while, and then returned, all of the intervening episodes would download automatically. But iOS 17 has made it so downloads pick up where you left off without those automatic downloads. In the end, it is a good thing both for your phone memory and for advertisers who want a precise idea of who is actually listening to their spots. But for publishers, it is …

Google Restricts Downloads of Airalo, Holafly in India for Not Complying With DoT Policy: Report

Google has restricted access to the apps of international eSIM providers Airalo and Holafly for users in India for not complying with existing telecom policies in the country, according to a report. The blocking of the apps, that provide access to SIM cards that provide access to calling and data while traveling to various countries, was reportedly done in compliance with directions issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to both Google and Apple. The latter is yet to block downloads of both apps in the country. A Moneycontrol report citing unnamed sources states that Google has restricted downloads of Airalo and Holafly for users in India via the Google Play store, as both apps did not have the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the DoT to sell or rent international roaming SIM cards to users in the country. The DoT has reportedly directed Google and Apple to block downloads of the apps in India, as they lacked the requisite approvals to operate in the country. Both Airalo and Holafly are currently unavailable in …
