Former Asiad medallist Ashish Kumar dropped from GFI’s SOM roster over eligibility criteria

The Gymnastics Federation of India has dropped former Commonwealth and Asian Games bronze-winner Ashish Kumar from its Sportspersons of Merit (SOM) roster as it responded to complaints of alleged irregularities in the selection process, describing them as a misunderstanding on being questioned by the Sports Ministry. As per the National Sports Governance Act, the SOM appointees are required to retire at least one year before applying for the position. Ashish and another gymnast Aditya Rana, who were included in GFI’s “provisional” SOM roster, competed as recently as April-May during a domestic event in Bhubaneswar. The Ministry sought GFIs response on complaints that they were included despite being ineligible. Former national champion Rakesh Kumar Patra, who is part of the revised SOM roster, was among the complainants. The GFI acknowledged including Ashish and Aditya based on their own declaration of being retired but said necessary “corrective action” was taken after scrutiny of applications and supporting documents, including retirement status. It also asserted that the action was initiated before Patra’s complaint on July 30. The GFI’s official …

Chris Brown pleads guilty to affray in London nightclub case; major assault charges dropped

American singer and actor Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray in connection with a 2023 confrontation at a London nightclub, after prosecutors dropped more serious assault charges that had been set to go to trial. US singer Chris Brown departs after attending a hearing at Southwark Crown Court in London on July 24. (AFP) Brown appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday and admitted to the lesser offence linked to an incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, according to The Guardian. He is due to be sentenced in October. Brown and his co-defendant, vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, had previously denied charges including causing grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon: a bottle. However, those charges were dropped after both men pleaded guilty to affray. What happened at the London nightclub? Dropped after three failures, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi answers back with an 18-ball fifty

4 min readJul 23, 2026 08:00 PM IST When India dropped Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after just three innings in England, it raised a few uncomfortable questions. Had they rushed his inclusion, only to be even quicker to drop him before the 15-year-old could find his feet in international cricket? The decision to leave out the left-hander looked like more than a tactical call for another right-hander in the batting order. Still, this was the first time Sooryavanshi had faced the cruel side of cricket at the top level: that he can be benched. So when Sooryavanshi took guard at Harare Sports Club on Thursday, all eyes were on how the teenager would respond to the first setback he has faced at this level. Since walking into the India U-19 side in 2024, he has been a mainstay of every side he has been part of. Perhaps returning to the venue where he scored 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final gave him some familiarity with the conditions. Still, there was plenty to watch for in how …

The JFI chief also clarified that Arun had not travelled with the Indian contingent, as the judo team is scheduled to leave for Glasgow on July 27. “No, he’s still in India. The team is supposed to leave on the 27th,” he said. Mukesh added that the late development has had no direct impact on the team’s preparations, as the squad is yet to depart for the …
