File | Photo Credit: The Hindu The Supreme Court on Wednesday (April 1, 2026) stayed criminal proceedings against Tamil Nadu Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) general secretary Duraimurugan in a disproportionate assets case. A Bench headed by Justice B.V. Nagarathna also issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government on the appeal filed by Mr. Duraimurugan against an order of the Madras High Court. The Bench posted Mr. Duraimurugan’s appeal, represented by senior advocate A.M. Singhvi, next on April 20. Govt. is against holding talks over inter-State water disputes as they are being heard in SC, says Duraimurugan

VENKATACHALAPATHY Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan on Monday reiterated that the government will not hold talks with neighbouring States, such as Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, over inter-State water disputes, as these were being heard in the Supreme Court. He also expressed concern over the safety of Tamils living in those States. Mr. Duraimurugan’s statement in the Assembly was in response to observations by Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami and AIADMK’s deputy floor leader R.B. Udhayakumar that the DMK government could have taken up these inter-State water disputes with the Chief Ministers of southern States, including Karnataka and Kerala, who visited Chennai recently. “If we hold talks, all our efforts will be ruined. We have tried holding talks many times, and only after realising that they have not been of much use, we have moved the Supreme Court. Stalin on Saturday visited the war room set up by the DMK IT Wing in Anna Arivalayam. He reviewed the assistance provided to the public by the party, according to a statement. Mr. Stalin interacted with those calling the war room with their complaints and enquired whether their problems were being resolved. State government to approach SC on non-release of Cauvery water by Karnataka: Duraimurugan

Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan on Wednesday said the state government would approach the Supreme Court on the issue of Karnataka not releasing Cauvery water. Their (Karnataka) stance of refusing to release water has remained the same even when they had adequate water and when they had lesser water, he told reporters in Chennai. They are refusing to release water despite the directions from the Cauvery Water Management Authority. Karnataka is not respecting the Centre’s directive. Sunil Kumar, Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan on Sunday inspected the work, which was started in December 2022 by the Water Resources Department (WRD) that maintains the twin irrigation tanks. With the withdrawal of northeast monsoon in the coming days, the work might be fast tracked due to decline in groundwater level around the lakes. It would help ongoing desilting and deepening of the waterbodies much faster. “The lakes help to recharge the groundwater covering at least 8-10 villages in its surroundings.
