Kerala eateries to shut for 24 hours tomorrow over LPG price hike protest

Hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and canteens across the state will remain closed for 24 hours on May 6 in protest against the steep hike in cooking gas prices, the KHRA said on Tuesday. As part of the statewide agitation, online food delivery services will also be suspended for the day, the association said in a press release. The protest has been called to demand a rollback of the LPG price hike. The Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association said that protest marches and dharnas will be organised in front of the offices of petroleum companies and central government establishments across the state. In Ernakulam, a protest dharna will be held in front of the Indian Oil Corporation office at Panampilly Nagar, which will be inaugurated by its state president, G Jayapal. Similar protests will be held at district headquarters across Kerala, the association added. Several trade bodies-the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi, Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithi, All Kerala Caterers Association, and Hostel Owners Federation-have extended support to the shutdown, KHRA office-bearers said. This comes after a crackdown on rooftop eateries was started by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation last week to mitigate fire safety issues after a major blaze at a city hotel took the lives of 14 people.  On May 5, the Calcutta High Court verbally asked the KMC officials to not demolish a rooftop restaurant in Park Street till Thursday where the demolition work had already begun last week. Representational Image Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has made it mandatory for every commercial establishment in the metropolis to put up signboards in Bengali along with other languages, an official said. The civic body is determined to enforce the usage of Bengali in signages, and has set a tentative deadline of February 21, 2025, to initiate the process, he said. Municipal Secretary Swapan Kundu said the corporation is in contact with the owners of shops, restaurants and other business establishments to ensure that names and other information about the outlets are written in Bengali in addition to any other language. In October, TMC Councillor Biswarup Dey had said at a KMC session that all signboards in public and private offices should have Bengali text apart from other languages and all notifications, letters and documents of the municipal corporation should also be published in Bengali.
