Brompton G e-bike review: truth in advertising

Brompton G e-bike review: truth in advertising

It fit! Despite Brompton embiggening everything on its iconic folding bike, I was chuffed to see the new model G e-bike collapse into a compact package I could hoist onto the narrow tray inside my adventure van — the first crucial step in testing what Brompton calls “the most versatile e-bike in the world.” The G lineup is already being sold in many countries as a regular bicycle or pedal-assisted electric bike, but only the former is currently sold in the US, with the e-bike coming later this fall. All Brompton G bikes come fitted with larger 20-inch wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, fat all-terrain tires, wider handlebars and pedals, and a longer wheel-base that reduces the twitchiness I experienced when reviewing Brompton’s first e-bike and rides more like a full-sized bicycle. The G lineup represents a major change for the nearly 50-year-old British bicycle company without compromising on the features that make Brompton bicycles so desirable in the first place. $4455 The Good Incredibly versatile Ride approximates full-size bike Folds very small Lightweight The Bad …

Engwe Mapfour N1 Pro e-bike review: the new ‘premium’

Engwe Mapfour N1 Pro e-bike review: the new ‘premium’

Europe has an electric bike problem. Direct-to-consumer e-bikes from inexpensive Chinese brands like Engwe and countless others can be easily purchased online despite openly flouting EU restrictions. They feature throttles and powerful motors that can be easily unlocked to far exceed the 25km/h (16mph) legal speed limit — no pedaling required. Here in Amsterdam, cheap Super73-knockoffs ridden at almost twice the legal speed have made the city’s renowned bicycle lanes increasingly chaotic and dangerous. Across the Netherlands, over 10,000 of these electric “fat bikes” were seized in 2024. Engwe’s new Mapfour lineup is the company’s attempt at going legit by expanding from souped-up electric fat bikes and foldables into “premium commuter” e-bikes. And because they’re the first e-bikes that Engwe has designed exclusively for European roads, the company swears they can’t be unlocked for more speed. I’ve been riding the new Mapfour N1 Pro model for the last few weeks. It lists for €1,899 (almost $2,000), or €1,799 during the initial launch — a price that brings heightened expectations. The N1 Pro is slathered in …

Fiido Air review: so lightweight you’ll forget it’s an e-bike

Yes, that’s an electric bike, though you wouldn’t know it from looks alone, or from hoisting it up some stairs since it weighs as much as a regular city bike at just 30 pounds (about 14kg).  What you’re looking at is the Fiido Air, a carbon fiber e-bike from the Chinese company I tested on a whim once, just to see what a $999 direct-to-consumer electric bike was like. Not great, it turned out, and its follow-up had a habit of breaking in two. But hey, I’m a forgiving type and the company did make amends to those affected. And Fiido says the Air is “the world’s lightest city e-bike” with a “super early bird” price tag of just $1799 at launch (or €1799 in Europe) — rising to $1999 and then $2799 later, ahead of August shipments. That’s just too tempting not to test, especially when it costs half that of the comparable Gogoro Eeyo. And after spending more than a month with a Fiido Air as my daily rider, I gotta say — I’m impressed… so long as you …

Gazelle launches ‘first and only’ Class 3 e-bike with Bosch Smart System in the US

Gazelle, the very popular Dutch bike brand owned by industry giant Pon Holdings, is launching its first Class 3 electric bike in the US. Gazelle says that its new Eclipse is the “first and only Class 3 e-bike in the US to feature Bosch’s Smart System,” which fully integrates the bike’s motor and electronics with the Bosch Flow app for a personalized ride that will receive continuous over-the-air bug fixes and feature updates long after purchase. Eclipse is available in both high- and low-step frames and built to easily handle heavy loads and hills on a variety of terrain. It features wide 60mm tires, a front shock, Shimano MT-420 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes, a large 750Wh battery, and a mid-drive Bosh motor with an impressive 85Nm of torque and 28mph top speed. Specifically, these e-bikes features a smart version of Bosch’s Performance Line Speed Motor offering an Auto mode that automatically adjusts power delivery to compensate for hills or headwinds, not unliked Cowboy’s adaptive power. It also has a walk-assist feature that helps push it up hills and …

Cake’s first e-bike can go over 200 miles before needing a charge

Cake, the Swedish maker of deliciously designed electric motorbikes, finally has an e-bike with actual pedals, not pegs. The Cake Äik comes in two street-legal variants: In the US, it ships with a throttle and mid-drive 500W motor (with a 1000W peak) with a 20mph (32km/h) top speed, while in Europe it’s pedal-assist only and you’re stuck with a 250W motor (500W peak) capable of just 16mph (25km/h) max.  Like the Cake Ösa electric moped I reviewed last summer, Åik is positioned less for commuters, and more as a utility bike for people that rely upon two-wheeled transport for their livelihoods or rugged outdoor fun. Mount a fridge on the back and power it off one of your three 750kWh batteries.Image: Cake The 66lbs (30kg) Åik, which translates to “big and heavy load,” is capable of carrying about 176lbs (80kg) in cargo — 132lbs (60kg) on the back and 44lbs (20kg) up front. The modular aluminium frame can be fitted with dizzying assortment of racks, bags, trailers, baskets, and even a passenger seat. It can …
