Filmfare’s Editor-in-Chief, Jitesh Pillaai reflects on the timeless genius of RD Burman, the maverick who redefined sound, soul, and spontaneity in Indian music. From intimate memories to immortal melodies, Pancham Da’s legacy continues to echo across generations. In Jitesh Pillaai’s words: It was a chance college assignment to interview a celebrity. I chose Rahul Dev Burman. I was not sure of the drill. I called on the landline; there were no mobile phones then. His secretary Bharat Asher mumbled that RD would be recording at Famous Studio, Mahalaxmi, his preferred music den. RDB had just suffered a stroke and was looking frail, supervising the background music for a film called Aag Se Khelenge (1989). He was monitoring a chase sequence between Jeetendra and Kimi Katkar. So there was me in some weird baseball cap and loafers. He sized me up. I told him the purpose of my meeting. He asked me to meet him the following day. I cannot even begin to describe how I felt that very moment. It was a lifetime of my music …

Centuries-old Renaissance sacred music echoes again in Goa churches| India News

As dusk settled over the neo-Gothic styled Mae de Deus Church, strains of a centuries-old motet— form of sacred music during Renaissance-era—rose once again, signalling a quiet cultural revival in Goa. Long relegated to fading memory, these deeply meditative Lenten (sacred musical) compositions, once central to Holy Week observances, are now being rediscovered and revived by a new generation of choirs in this church in north Goa’s Saligao. Centuries-old Renaissance sacred music return to Goa churches, as choirs revive a unique Renaissance-era sacred music tradition during Holy Week. These evocative compositions, rooted in passages from the Bible, recount the suffering and death of Jesus Christ through layered, polyphonic harmonies known as motets. Once an integral part of Lenten liturgy in Goa, this musical tradition had gradually slipped into decline but is now being revived. It is among hundreds of Latin and Konkani …

Trump’s tariffs are here to stay: How State of the Union address echoes Peter Navarro’s claim | Explained News

The US Supreme Court’s ruling last week on President Donald Trump’s tariffs has been perceived as a significant setback for his administration’s economic and foreign policy agenda. Having previously called the verdict “deeply disappointing” in its immediate aftermath, Trump on Tuesday (February 24) reiterated his displeasure during what was his longest State of the Union address to date (108 minutes), where he said that despite the court’s “very unfortunate ruling”, the “threat of tariffs” would “remain in place under fully approved and tested alternative legal statutes”. A recent piece in Financial Times by Peter Navarro, senior White House counsellor for trade and manufacturing, attempted to read between the lines of the court ruling, focusing on these “alternative legal statutes”. Navarro, considered the chief architect of Trump’s tariff strategy, has targeted India in the past. In an FT op-ed last August, he had accused India of funding Russia’s war in Ukraine by acting as a “global clearinghouse for Russian oil”  and calling India’s dependence on Russian crude “opportunistic”. So, what is Navarro’s contention on the recent …

Ground Zero actor Emraan Hashmi echoes similar sentiments as Anurag Kashyap on Adolescence: ‘Would be a logistical nightmare…’

Stephen Graham’s Adolescence four-episode Netflix drama Adolescence, released on March 14, became a big hit and earned widespread praise from critics. Earlier, Anurag Kashyap had shared that a series like this would likely be turned down in India. Adding to the conversation, Emraan Hashmi, recently seen in Ground Zero, has now remarked that creating such a show in the Indian context would be a ‘logistical nightmare’. In an interview with News18, Emraan Hashmi opened up on Adolescence and shared that it worked because of its powerful theme, the pitfalls of growing up in the age of social media. He also pointed out that it was a risky project, noting that with just four episodes, each captured in a single continuous take, the series was a bold creative gamble. He further talked about how such a project might be received in India, explaining that most producers would likely reject the idea outright. “Pitching something like this here,” he said, “and you’d probably hear, ‘Are you out of your mind?’ from nine out of ten producers.” He …
