The Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), the apex student organisation of Assam’s Mising community, on Wednesday launched an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh in protest against the alleged firing in which 12 indigenous people were injured. As part of the agitation, protesters blocked key entry points along the inter-state border, including roads at Dwarmukh-Banderdewa, Ruksin in Dhemaji, Banderdewa in Lakhimpur, Solengi in Gohpur and Pabhoi in Biswanath, they said. Recently, India disbursed the fifth tranche of the India-Bhutan Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) of ₹250 crore reaffirming its central role in catalysing Bhutan’s economic revitalisation, post-pandemic recovery, and generating employment. India has committed a total of ₹1,500 crore under ESP, out of which ₹1,250 crore has been disbursed to date. Another cheque of ₹250 crore was handed over under the National Fuel Price Smoothening Framework, to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices on Bhutanese economy. Bhutan India remains Bhutan’s primary development partner, with more than 30% of the capital expenditure in Bhutan’s 2026-27 budget supported directly through Indian grants. For the 13th Five-Year Plan (2024-2029), India has committed a total of ₹10,000 crore. To date, approximately ₹3,400 crore has been released, covering project assistance and high-impact community development initiatives such as Digital Drukyul, hospitality and tourism, start-ups and innovation as well as education. According to a Lok Sabha bulletin, the Standing Committee on Finance has chosen ‘Evolving Economic Conditions in the Country’ as an additional subject for detailed examination during the year 2025-26. Parliamentary panels select their subjects soon after they are constituted. But they are at liberty to select additional subjects, keeping in mind evolving circumstances. Indian economy is estimated to have grown at 7.7% in 2025-26 (April-March), with a robust 7.8% growth in the January-March quarter. India’s GDP had grown at 7.1% in the 2024-25 fiscal year. However, the RBI estimates GDP growth to slow to 6.6% in the current fiscal year as the ongoing conflict in West Asia pushes up cost of fertiliser and fuel globally.
