J Shivamogga Congress spokesperson Bhavya Narasimhamurthy has alleged that the women’s reservation Bill moved by the ruling BJP-led NDA in Parliament was, in effect, a measure to protect seats for men. Speaking at a press conference in Shivamogga on Saturday (April 25, 2026), Ms. Narasimhamurthy said that when the Bill was tabled in 2023, it had received support from all parties. The Congress had urged the Centre to implement it immediately across all 543 parliamentary constituencies. However, the BJP introduced an amendment linking implementation of women’s reservation to delimitation, which would first require an increase in the total number of seats. ‘Op Lotus’ effect: How ‘mergers’ of Opposition legislators, factions with BJP took place in states after 2014 | Political Pulse News

There have been multiple instances of the Opposition MPs and MLAs changing their party loyalties and switching to the BJP since 2014, when the latter swept to power at the Centre with its first absolute majority. The crossing over of seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs, led by Raghav Chadha, to the BJP Friday falls in one of the ways this has happened – seeking to beat the anti-defection law through a two-thirds strength of the defecting faction. Some of its other methods have included resignations – such as the resignations of 22 Congress MLAs in Madhya Pradesh in March 2020 to topple the Kamal Nath government – and aiding the BJP without shifting to it, like eight Congress MLAs defying party whip and abstaining during a trust vote to help the BJP government in Manipur survive in 2020, besides the cases of individual leaders joining the BJP. The seven rebel AAP MPs used a method that has been used several times in the past – that of breaking more than two-thirds of …

Decoding the Bengal turnout saurge: SIR effect, dip in absolute numbers | Political Pulse News

Polling in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections Thursday set a new record of voter turnout over 92%, more than 10 percentage points higher than the 2021 turnout. This reflects not just the deletion of electors – deceased, shifted, absent, duplicate – from the rolls during the Special Intensive Revision, bringing down the overall base and enhancing the percentage, it also points to robust voting by those who had cleared the Election Commission’s SIR test. The ruling TMC and challenger BJP interpreted this record turnout in opposing ways, each announcing a mandate in its favour and the beginning of the end of the other. While the turnout saw a record spike, the number of voters in absolute terms was over 12% lower than the number for votes cast in these 152 constituencies in 2021. According to the provisional turnout figures, around 47 lakh fewer people voted in these seats this time compared to 2021. Started in October last year, the SIR of electoral rolls led to a total of 91 lakh electors …

The I.R.G.C. called Washington’s move “illegal” and an “act of piracy,” warning that if Iranian ports are threatened, no port in the region would remain safe. Tehran signaled it could tighten control over Hormuz, a vital global oil route. Donald Trump doubled down, claiming Iranian naval assets had been “obliterated” and warning of immediate strikes on any approaching vessels.
