Covid-19 Surge In Asia: How Dangerous Is JN.1 Variant And Are Existing Vaccines Effective?

Last Updated:May 19, 2025, 09:58 IST JN.1, a variant of Omicron BA.2.86, emerged in late 2023 with 30 immune-evasion mutations. It spreads more efficiently due to additional mutations, says Johns Hopkins University. The prevalent variants at present are LF.7 and NB.1.8, both descendants of JN.1, making up over two-thirds of sequenced cases in Singapore. (Photo: AP file) A fresh wave of COVID-19 has emerged across parts of Asia, raising alarms worldwide. Countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Thailand are reporting a notable increase in new infections. This surge is largely attributed to the spread of new Omicron subvariants, including JN.1 and its related descendants, prompting renewed vigilance among health authorities. In Singapore alone, infections rose sharply to over 14,000 in early May 2025 from 11,100 cases in the last week of April. While hospitalisations have also gone up, ICU cases have seen a slight decline. Officials report no evidence suggesting that the current variants are more transmissible or severe than those seen previously. The increase may be attributed to waning immunity, with periodic …

GT’s Ishant Sharma Reveals How Ashish Nehra Made Pacers Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna More Effective

GT’s Ishant Sharma Reveals How Ashish Nehra Made Pacers Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna More Effective

Making Mohammed Siraj trust his outswinger a little more while getting Prasidh Krishna to bring his length a little ahead are the changes which Gujarat Titans’ head coach Ashish Nehra has brought about in the two pacers, which in turn has made them more effective bowlers, revealed veteran pacer Ishant Sharma. “Ashish bhai didn’t change much in his bowling. The only change he made was that sometimes, Siraj didn’t feel very confident in his outswing. But this is the only difference in a good coach, especially if that coach has bowled in international cricket.” “So he has that experience, and he always said to him, ‘Trust your outswinger. That is your stock ball’. He used to bowl with a wobble-seam – it would come in after the ball hit the seam. So he used to bowl it a lot earlier, and he stopped bowling his outswinger.” “So, Ashish bhai said, ‘No, your first ball will be an outswing. When this ball stops swinging, you will go for that ball (wobble-seam ball). So he …

HIT 3 movie review: An effective Nani sees red in this bloody but rocky action drama | Movie-review News

HIT 3 movie review: Why doesn’t John Wick die? Why doesn’t Ethan Hunt die? Why doesn’t any bullet even graze the shoulders of our heroes when they have insane precision with their shots? How do the henchmen die with a couple of slashes by a machete but the hero survives a thousand blows? Of course, there is no point asking these questions simply because we know the answer. He is the hero, and at the end of the day, he has to walk into the sunset with a girl in tow even if he is a bloodied mess. Director Sailesh Kolanu’s third installment in the popular HIT franchise, follows this template right from the word go, and converts our ‘beloved-boy-next-door’ Nani into a ‘kick-the-door open and innovatively kill and maim 100 people’ Nani. Unlike the first two installments, HIT 3, with Nani at the helm, gets to have a bigger budget, a bigger vision, and a bigger scale. If the first two films were firmly set in Vishakhapatnam and its nearby areas, the third film …

Maranamass Movie Review: Basil Joseph leads an effective ensemble in this dark comedy with both hits and misses | Movie-review News

Maranamass Movie Review: Serial killer films are mosty about unmasking the killer and unravelling the reason behind the killings. And then there are films where you know the killer’s identity right from the first scene, and it is all about how they are brought to justice. And then there is Sivaprasad’s Maranamass which tells us about the killer, his modus operandi, and his targets. There is no ‘surprise’ in what happens in the life of this serial killer who has a method to his madness of stuffing a banana in the mouth of his victims. Of course, the identity of the serial killer, played to perfection by Rajesh Madhavan, is known to the audience, and yet… we are invested in what happens. Why? Because the makers of Maranamass fill the narrative with eclectic characters who have individual arcs, and quirks. Maranamass is a series of happenings, and not a structured narrative that connects all the dots. Here, everything just happens, and that’s what makes the mayhem all the more fun. Yes, the leads of Maranamass …
