Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly assaulted by protesters on Saturday after he reached Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal to meet a party worker who reportedly became a victim of post-poll violence after the results of the recently concluded assembly elections were announced on May 4. On Saturday afternoon, shortly after receiving a notice from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for interrogation at his residence on Kalighat Road in south Kolkata, Banerjee left for Sonarpur. His vehicle first encountered protests at Kamal Gazi, where a group of women showed him black flags, news agency IANS reported. However, larger protests awaited him upon his arrival in Sonarpur, where hundreds of local residents, including women, raised slogans against him and described him as a “thief”. Banerjee then got off his vehicle and rode on a motorcycle belonging to a local TMC activist to reach his destination. The 28-year-old transgender man approached the High Court after a private fertility centre refused to provide the service. For this, the centre cited that the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Act did not contain any provision to permit the extension of such a service to a transgender person. While hearing the plea, the High Court directed that the clinic that the person chose ought to take steps to retrieve and preserve his eggs so that they can be used for reproduction at a later stage in his life. The incident took place at the Kasturba Gandhi Girls’ School hostel in Regode mandal of Medak district. According to Regode Police, the students had eaten boiled eggs served at the hostel on Wednesday night. Soon after the meal, several girls began complaining of vomiting and discomfort. As their condition worsened, they were rushed to a nearby government hospital for treatment. Police officials said that 13 students have been declared stable, while 15 others remain under medical observation.
