PMC polls: Mohol takes on Ajit Pawar for fielding candidates with ‘criminal background’ | Pune News

Contesting independently and taking on each other despite being in alliance in the state and Centre, the BJP on Thursday took on the Ajit Pawar-led NCP for fielding candidates with what it called “criminal backgrounds” for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections. “Being the guardian minister of Pune, it is necessary to give priority to maintaining the law and order situation by controlling crime. Instead, look at the list of candidates of our rival (NCP). It is filled with persons of criminal background,” Union Minister of State (MoS) for Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said. “It is necessary for all the political parties to think about the situation seriously and work towards keeping politics free of criminal elements,” he added. When pointed out that the BJP has fielded Pratibha Chorghe, whose husband has been accused of being linked to illegal activities, Mohol said, “Chorghe has done social work and is popular among locals. File | Photo Credit: ANI Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Aaditya Thackeray on Monday (December 8, 2025) claimed that 22 MLAs from a Mahayuti ally have “grown close” to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and are ready to switch sides, an oblique reference to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. In June 2022, the Shiv Sena split following a rebellion led by Mr. Shinde, resulting in the collapse of the then Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi Government. Later, in January 2024, Assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar held that the Eknath Shinde-led faction was the “real” Shiv Sena, which is a constituent of the ruling Mahayuti in the State along with the BJP and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s NCP. “There is one party and two factions on the treasury side. Maharashtra Assembly Elections: In the wake of upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has released its third list of 15 candidates, putting up Shaina NC from Mumbadevi constituency, Shashikant Narsingrao Khedekar from Shindkhed Raja, Rajesh Govardhan More from Kalyan Rural and Ajit Bappasaheb Pingle from Dharashiv seat among others.
