The Supreme Court has ruled that tribunals constituted under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 have the power to order eviction of persons from a property when such a measure is necessary to ensure the senior citizen’s maintenance or protection. Supreme court emphasised that the measure of a civilised society is often reflected in the dignity, respect and security it affords to its elderly. (Shrikant Singh) A bench of justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe said that the legislation was intended to ensure that advancing age does not become synonymous with “neglect, insecurity, or indignity” and reflects values deeply rooted in the country’s civilisational ethos, which “revere the mother and the father as divine.” It emphasised that the measure of a civilised society is often reflected in the dignity, respect and security it affords to its elderly. “Across cultures, religions, and civilisations, senior citizens have been regarded not merely as dependents requiring care, but as repositories of wisdom, experience, and collective memory whose guidance enriches families and society alike,” said …

Man arrested for killing elderly woman in Tiruvannamalai

A 30-year-old construction worker was arrested by the Polur police in Tiruvannamalai on Sunday for allegedly killing an elderly woman who allegedly stopped providing free food to him. Police said the arrested person was identified as R. Murthy, a daily wage labourer. The victim, B. Yasoda, 62, and Murthy belong to Ezhuvambadi village near Polur town in the district. Initial inquiry revealed that Yasoda was living with her son, Venu, a mechanic, in the village after her husband died many years ago. Murthy was a neighbour who lived alone after his family abandoned him. Yasoda has been providing free food to Murthy for the past few years. Agitated Murthy quarrelled with Yasoda for not giving him food. In a fit of rage, Murthy allegedly stabbed her when she was returning home on Sunday. Police said residents and neighbours raised the alarm and alerted …

Netflix’s elderly monster hunters are fun, but offer little novelty

Old age is often called a “second childhood.” The signs are easy to spot, increased reliance on others, the need for attention, a certain unfiltered honesty, and an emotional nakedness that age rarely bothers to conceal. The only thing separating the two is wisdom. Older people have simply seen more moonlight than the younger ones. But what happens when you take a bunch of old people, place them inside a Stranger Things-like universe, and ask them to save their friends from creatures that crawl out of ovens at night and drink brain fluid while people sleep? You get The Boroughs, unsurprisingly executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers. And while the similarities between Stranger Things and The Boroughs are impossible to ignore, what ultimately separates the two is not the premise, but the treatment. Monsters and creatures have enjoyed remarkable longevity in pop culture. It is a strange case, really. Entire living, breathing communities still struggle for meaningful representation (which they absolutely deserve), but monsters — whose existence remains wonderfully debatable — have enjoyed decades of cinematic …
