Bankipur bypoll results: Prashant Kishor wins from BJP's stronghold

In a major political development in Bihar, Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor on Monday won the Bankipur Assembly by-election, ending the BJP’s uninterrupted hold over the constituency since 1995, reported PTI. The victory marks the first time in over three decades that the BJP has lost the prestigious urban constituency. The bypoll was necessitated after BJP national president Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. Making his electoral debut, the 49-year-old defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a margin of 19,324 votes, securing 64,151 votes.  Historic debut victory Political strategist-turned-politician, Kishor had framed the bypoll as a “referendum” on the BJP-led government in Bihar. The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved orders on the question whether the law appointing Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners should be referred for decision by a five-judge bench as Centre objected to a two-judge bench deciding on this issue. The bench of justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma said, “The judgment on the question as to whether the writ petitions need to be referred to a bench of five judges is reserved.” (PTI) The court passed the order while hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the validity of the CEC and EC (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. The house-to-house visits by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), which began on June 30 and was originally scheduled to conclude by July 29, will now continue till August 8. The final electoral roll will now be published on October 19 instead of October 10. The national capital has more than 1.45 crore voters. The Election Commission on Tuesday extended the deadline for various activities under the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh and Haryana.
