Image used for representative purpose only. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Indian States collectively spend nearly ₹2.4 lakh crore a year on subsidising electricity for agricultural and domestic consumers, Ministry for New and Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said, adding that the Centre’s solar programmes are increasingly designed not just to add clean energy capacity but to persuade States that this subsidy bill can be eliminated over time. “Different States have different amounts which they give. So to that extent they will save on this huge subsidy outgo once they adopt more and more farm solarisation and more and more rooftop solarisation,” Mr. Sarangi told The Hindu in an interview. CM Stalin chairs a meeting on the LPG shortage crisis on Saturday | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday (March 14, 2026) announced a ₹2-per-unit subsidy on electricity for hotels, tea stalls, and cloud kitchens that use electric stoves instead of LPG cylinders. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to discuss the crisis caused by the lack of adequate LPG in the wake of the war in West Asia. A State government press release said the subsidy would remain in place until the regulations on the use of LPG cylinders were lifted. The government also allotted 3,228 kilolitres of kerosene for distribution to ration card holders. Loans for MSMEs The government further announced loans for micro, small, and medium enterprises to purchase electric stoves and heaters to overcome the LPG shortage. Under the Unemployed Youth Employment Generation Programme (UYEGP), loans with a grant of 25% or a maximum grant of ₹3.75 lakh would be released. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday voluntarily relinquished the subsidy on all five power connections registered in his name. He also said that affluent citizens with multiple electricity connections should relinquish subsidies to support the development of the state. Submitting the required documents to Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board chairman Sanjay Gupta, Sukhu urged the well-off individuals in the state to follow suit by using the online portal of the board, or by calling helpline numbers 1100 or 1912, or by visiting their nearest electricity sub-division. Addressing a press conference, the chief minister said all the Cabinet members and Congress MLAs in the state have agreed to forgo their subsidies following detailed discussions. “The government spends Rs 2,200 crore annually on electricity subsidies and Rs 200 crore per month on salaries and pensions of electricity board employees. Subsidies should be reserved for the needy, and the well-off individuals must contribute towards building a fairer society,” Sukhu said.
