4 min readMumbaiJul 2, 2026 11:00 PM IST The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recorded the statements of six persons, including three journalists expelled from the Mumbai Press Club and three office-bearers of the club, as part of its probe into the January 19 gathering at the club that has become central to its bid to cancel the bail of several accused in the Elgaar Parishad case. Sources said the agency questioned senior journalists Gurbir Singh, Bernard D’Mello and Shrikant Modak, who were expelled from the club in April, along with Mumbai Press Club secretary Mayuresh Ganpatye, chairman Rajesh Mascarenhas and treasurer Sourabh Sharma during the first week of June. According to sources, NIA officials sought details of the January 19 meeting held on the club’s terrace, which was attended by several accused in the Elgaar Parishad case who are currently out on bail. Bombay HC judge recuses from hearing Anand Teltumbde’s discharge plea, other Elgaar Parishad matters | Mumbai News

Justice Sarang V Kotwal of the Bombay High Court Thursday recused himself from hearing an appeal filed by academician Anand Teltumbde against the special court’s rejection of his discharge application along with other Elgaar Parishad case matters. In May 2024, the special court rejected Teltumbde’s discharge plea stating that the material on record prima facie revealed his involvement in the case. The matter was listed before a division bench of Justices Kotwal and Shriram M Modak on Thursday. Justice Kotwal said he had heard and decided bail pleas by a few accused in the case in his capacity as a single judge. “In this matter, one of us (Sarang V Kotwal, J, sitting as a single Judge, had decided three bail applications (by Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves) wherein various provisions of law were discussed. Therefore, propriety demands that the matter be heard on all aspects by a different bench. Year after being granted bail, Elgaar Parishad accused Mahesh Raut remains in jail | Mumbai News

On September 21, 2023, the Bombay High Court granted bail to activist Mahesh Raut, an accused in the Elgaar Parishad case. A year later, 37-year-old Raut remains in jail, with a stay granted then on his bail order by the High Court for three weeks, extended from time to time with no effective hearing so far on the appeal in the Supreme Court. Raut has been behind bars since his arrest in 2018. The High Court granted him bail in 2023 but stayed the order for three weeks to allow the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file an appeal. The NIA filed an appeal immediately and it was heard for the first time in the SC on September 27 2023. So far, the case has come up for hearing in the SC 13 times.
