Sheikh Hamad headed the gas-rich Gulf country of Qatar from 1995 to 2013. The former Emir, who was 74-year-old at the time of his death, is credited with transforming the Persian Gulf nation into a key player in diplomacy, media and investment across national boundaries. India’s tricolour will be flown at half-mast and there will be no official entertainment on the day, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement. New Delhi: Qatar and India have agreed today to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership and an agreement in this regard was exchanged between the two nations. The decision was announced after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani in New Delhi. The two leaders held wide-ranging bilateral talks at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The focus of the meeting was on enhancing trade, investment, technology, energy, food security, culture, and people-to-people ties. The two sides discussed the potential of a free trade agreement and also planned on doubling their trade to $28 billion within five years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday will travel to Kuwait on a two-day visit, the first by an Indian premier in more than four decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick off his two-day Kuwait visit on Saturday with a visit to an Indian labour camp, with an aim to show solidarity with the Indian labour force employed in the country. The PM, who was invited by the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, will also hold bilateral talks with the Emir, and Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, besides an interaction with the Indian diaspora.
