“It’s the most difficult thing I’ve experienced”

Former England wicker-keeper Ben Foakes said was dropped as Test wicket-keeper in a phone call that lasted only 10 seconds. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, he recalled the horror of the moment. “I knew I was dropped already – just because of the way that lads were being pulled out of games,” Foakes recalls. “You don’t need a degree to work out that if you haven’t been told, you’ve been dropped. I knew it was coming. Then I got told I was dropped. And then ever since, no contact.” The 32-year-old played 26 Tests for England, the last one coming against in Dharamsala. A wicket-keeper in the classical mould with fine reflexes, his batting was more grit than flash, one of the reasons he did not quite fit into the Bazball era. The lack of explanation hurt him, “I was like ‘you don’t need to explain anything. I know what’s going on here.’ And then that’s it.” Story continues below this ad Devastated, it affected his motivation for the next few months. “When …

Jon Lewis leaves his role as England women’s head coach

England women’s cricket head coach Jon Lewis has left his role, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Friday after the side lost 16-0 against Australia in women’s Ashes earlier this year. Lewis took over the coaching role in November 2022, during which England won 52 out of their 73 games, with the team currently second behind Australia in the ICC world rankings for T20I and ODI cricket. A clean sweep by the hosts in Australia, which came after a group-stage exit in last year’s Women’s T20 World Cup, saw the ECB launch an ‘honest’ review last month. Story continues below this ad “While the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes in Australia have been disappointing, there is no doubt about the talent we have available and we will look to appoint a successor shortly. We must be ready for an exciting summer of international cricket and to challenge for two World Cups over the next 15 months, including the T20 World Cup in this country next year,” Clare Connor, ECB Managing …

England Cricket Board set to ban its players from participating in franchise leagues; IPL the only exception: Report | Cricket News

The England Cricket Board have reportedly banned its players from taking part in franchise leagues including the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be exempted from the ban, according to The Telegraph. The decision was apparently taken because the English board wants to improve the quality of domestic cricket in the country. The report stated that the board will not be handing out no objection certificates (NOCs) to franchise leagues which run parallel to the domestic season which would mean that the PSL, which is scheduled to be played from April to May, will find themselves without some top English names. The decision might also turn out to be a double-aged sword with players opting to play in the franchise leagues after cancelling their contracts with the board. The report also stated that even the players who are not active anymore in the first class circuit won’t be given an out from county cricket. Also, the players who have only white-ball contracts will be able to play the leagues provided …

IPL playoffs: Sunil Gavaskar demands that foreigners who leave early be hit with ‘salary cuts’ | Ipl News

Sunil Gavaskar has made a scathing attack on the English Cricket Board (ECB) for asking their T20 World Cup-bound players to return home early. Gavaskar has suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) must “penalise players” and the “boards.” “I am all for players choosing country before anything else but having assured various franchises about their availability for the full season, if they pull out now, it will be letting down the franchises which probably pay them more money in one IPL season which they don’t earn in a few seasons with their country,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-day. “The franchises should not only be allowed to deduct a substantial amount from the fee that the player was bought for, but also not give the Board, to which the player belongs, the stated 10 per cent commission of the fee that each player gets. Phil Salt of Kolkata Knight Riders and Shreyas Iyer (c) of Kolkata Knight Rider during match 28 of the Indian Premier League season 17 (IPL …
