India’s higher education enrolment touched a record 45 million in 2023-24, with women’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes continuing to rise, according to the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) reports released by the Union ministry of education on Wednesday. Female enrolment climbed to 22.4 million AISHE is the ministry’s annual survey of higher education institutions that compiles official data on enrolment, teachers, infrastructure and finances to support policy planning and monitor the sector. The ministry simultaneously released the AISHE reports for 2022-23 and 2023-24. The previous report, for 2021-22, was published on December 31, 2022, making these the first survey reports to be released since then. The survey showed that total enrolment in higher education increased from 44.6 million in 2022-23 to 45 million in 2023-24, up from 34.2 million in 2014-15 — a 31.5% increase over the decade. Enrolment in government schools fell by nearly 86 lakh between 2023-24 and 2025-26 while private unaided recognised schools added more than 88 lakh students during the same period, according to the UDISE 2025-26 report released by the Ministry of Education on 7 July. UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) is the Centre’s official digital database for the education sector. Maintained by the Ministry of Education, it collates real-time statistics on school infrastructure, student enrolment, and teacher metrics. 11.89 cr enrolments in Govt schools 2025-26 The total enrolment from foundational to secondary level stood at 24.72 crore in 2025-26, compared with 24.80 crore in 2023-24 – a decline of about 8.26 lakh. A Jaipur-based techie has exposed an internship offer that allegedly asked candidates to pay a fee before joining the company. The post, shared on X by user Poonam, quickly went viral and drew reactions from several users who claimed they had received similar offers. Netizens called the offer a scam and warned students against paying companies for internships. Days after the Punjab department of health and family welfare issued directions to deploy computer teachers along with other staff for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana enrolment camps, the district education officials have been instructed not to assign such duties to teachers. New Delhi, Despite a steadily growing student population across school and higher education levels, the number of teachers in Delhi’s educational institutions has seen only marginal change over recent years, according to data from the Department of Economics and Statistics. The total number of teachers in educational institutions stood at 1,60,479 in 2023-24 and rose slightly to 1,61,958 in 2024-25. Of the total teachers in 2024-25, 43,400 were men, and 1,18,558 were women, the data shows. At the primary school level, the number of teachers increased marginally from 25,970 in 2023-24 to 26,560 in 2024-25, with female teachers continuing to form the majority, the data stated. In middle schools, teacher strength rose from 11,276 to 11,556 during the same period, while secondary schools recorded a slight decline, with the number of teachers falling from 8,529 in 2023-24 to 8,405 in 2024-25, it showed. The Uttar Pradesh government has made admission process easier for underprivileged children by eliminating the need for children’s Aadhar cards. The state government has revamped the admission process for enrolment in private schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. To remove the obstacles and contingencies in the admission process of disadvantaged groups and address the woes of parents seeking admission of their wards, UP government made this landmark move. Previously, Aadhar card of both parents and that of the child seeking admission were mandatory requirement while filing online application form for RTE admissions. Reacting to the modification of admission process, Basic and Secondary Education Additional Chief Secretary Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma said, “Our effort is to make ‘ease of living’ a reality as far as possible, especially for the families genuinely belonging to disadvantaged groups, in the spirit of RTE,” Times of India reported. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in Rajya Sabha Tuesday that the Centre was not imposing Hindi but promoting multilingualism with its New Education Policy.
