Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan on Monday advised citizens to give accurate information to Census enumerators, asserting that the individual data will remain confidential and cannot be used as evidence or to get benefit under any scheme. Addressing a press conference, as the first phase of the country’s 16th Census is all set to begin in April in some states, including Delhi, the commissioner said under Section 15 of the Census Act, all individual data remains confidential.  The Census will be conducted in Delhi from April 16 to May 15. Meanwhile, the government has notified 33 questions that will be put to citizens during the first phase of the Census houselisting and housing enumeration, starting April 1, 2026. Bhubaneswar, The first phase of the Census House Listing Operations will begin across all 30 districts of Odisha from April 16 and continue till May 15, a top official said on Wednesday. Odisha to begin phase-1 of Census House Listing from April 16 Addressing a press conference here, Director of Census Operations in Odisha, Nikhil Pavan Kalyan, said over 1 lakh trained enumerators and 17,282 supervisors will visit households and collect data during the period. They will ask 33 questions prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs to the head of each household, including residential, non-residential, jails, malls, etc, he said. “Persons residing in any place in Odisha, whether from the state or other states, will be enumerated. Not a single household will be left out during the Census,” Kalyan added. He said the operation will be conducted through field visits using a mobile application. The Ministry of Home Affairs Wednesday notified the commencement of house-listing operations for the Census of India 2027, to be conducted between April 1 and September 30, 2026, across all States/UTs, kick-starting preparations for the 16th Census, the first in 16 years. Each state and UT will carry out the exercise during a 30-day window within this period, according to the notification by the Office of the Registrar General of India (RGI). In a significant departure from previous censuses, the notification also formally provides for self-enumeration, available for a 15-day period immediately preceding the house-to-house house-listing, allowing households to submit details digitally before an enumerator visits them. The notification, issued under Sections 3 and 17A of the Census Act, 1948, supersedes an earlier January 2020 notification that had set the stage for the 2021 Census, which was deferred due to the pandemic.
