Moshi garbage depot collapse: Death toll rises to 9, rescue ops end

The five-day rescue operation at the Moshi Garbage Depot has ended after rescuers recovered one more body from the debris on Sunday, taking the death toll to nine. The tragedy unfolded on July 8 when a massive garbage mound collapsed onto the administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project at the landfill site. Fourteen people were rescued or escaped, while nine workers lost their lives. Officials said 23 people were inside or around the building when the collapse occurred. Five workers escaped immediately after the incident, while rescue teams pulled nine others out alive during the operation. The incident has triggered serious concerns over waste management practices, urban planning, environmental compliance and civic accountability in Pimpri-Chinchwad, one of India’s fastest-growing cities. Experts believe heavy monsoon rain destabilised the towering landfill, creating lateral pressure that caused the garbage mound to collapse onto the building. State to audit thermal power plants amid concerns over fly ash pollution

The Maharashtra government on Thursday agreed to carry out an audit of thermal power plants after legislators raised concerns in the Assembly about the disposal of fly ash and its impact on the environment, particularly in Chandrapur district, as per PTI reports. Responding to a calling attention notice moved by BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde said “The government will conduct the necessary audit and review of thermal power plants and their fly ash management systems. NGT takes cognisance of Indian Express report, seeks replies from BMC CPCB and MPCB | Mumbai News

Observing that it ‘raises substantial issue of compliance of environmental norms,’ the National Green Tribunal recently took a suo motu cognisance of the Indian Express Investigation report titled ‘Mumbai lost over 21,000 trees in 6 years to make way for Metro, road projects’ published last month. The panel issued notices to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board (MPCB) through their respective member secretaries, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (HoFF), Maharashtra, Commissioner of Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai district collector and added them as respondents in the plea. A quorum of Justices Prakash Shrivastava (chairperson), Arun Kumar Tyagi (Judicial member) and Afroz Ahmad- expert member in an order passed on April 16 referred to a report published on March 26 in the Indian Express, which, stated that Mumbai has witnessed felling of at least 21,028 trees over the past six years, according to data provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to The Indian Express under the RTI Act.
