Man City appoint ex-Chelsea boss Maresca to succeed Guardiola as manager

3 min readJun 29, 2026 10:37 PM IST Premier League side Manchester City have finally found a name to replace departing coach Pep Guardiola, as Enzo Maresca has been appointed the new manager, the club announced on Monday. The Italian joins City following a mid-season exit from Chelsea and has signed a three-year contract. Maresca brings familiarity with Man City’s set-up, having previously coached the club’s youth team. He was also the senior side’s assistant coach under Guardiola during City’s 2018-19 treble-winning season. In what was termed as the end of an era, Guardiola left City at the end of the 2025-26 season after spending 10 long years. Guardiola, who took charge of City in 2016, won six Premier League titles — including four in a row — three FA Cups, five League Cups and the Champions League. The Spaniard left the club with a domestic double — the FA Cup and the EFL Cup — in his final season. Maresca called it a brilliant opportunity to be back with the club he says he “knows …

Why Ruben Amorim’s axing signals end of super managers in football | Football News

The axing of Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim captures a broader narrative in football. The era of super managers is over, the cult of managers is fading. The nature of his ouster, after fallouts with the CEO, Sporting director and recruitment head, despite a recent upswing in fortunes, affirms the altered reality that the manager is but just another cog, a highly dispensable one, in the vast machinery of running a football club. Amorim, like a young and deluded romantic, remained firm to his ideals. “Not even the Pope could change my tactics,” he would defend his devotion to three man defence. The Pope did not insist; minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe did. United, this season, was an upgraded product, but the flare-ups, some of them in public, cost him his grand project. They defended his tactics in the initial months, they stood behind him when he culled out the revolting players, they pacified his defeats, but when he turned against them, they cut them off like a ruthless mafia syndicate. Chelsea’s shunted-manager Enzo Maresca would …

‘He has got some things wrong at times’ : John Terry reacts to Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca | Football News

Former Chelsea captain and club legend John Terry expressed shock at the exit of manager Enzo Maresca on Thursday. The 45-year-old said that he was “completely shocked” by the club’s decision to part ways with the Italian, admitting that he did not see it coming. Maresca was sacked by the London club on Thursday, with the side having a difficult run of results in December, and reports of a worsening relationship between the manager and the Chelsea’s hierarchy. “Enzo Maresca has just been sacked by Chelsea, and to be honest, I am completely shocked. I did not see it coming. I know things of late have not been how he would like. You can see and hear that there has been tension,” Terry said in a TikTok video. The former centre-back felt that the decision to part ways with Maresca was an even bigger shock as it came a few weeks after Chelsea had defeated Barcelona in the Champions League. “Just my opinion from afar, there has clearly been tension between the manager and the …

Chelsea and manager Enzo Maresca part ways | Football News

Chelsea and their head coach Enzo Maresca have officially parted ways, the English club announced on Thursday. This was after the club and the manager not seeing eye to eye after a spate of disappointing results in recent times. “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club,” the statement from Chelsea read. With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well for the future,” it added. The current Club World Cup champions have just 2 wins in all competitions in their last 9 matches. One of them was against Everton where the first indication of strife …

Amid fines and bans, Chelsea boss Maresca defends his players’ discipline after Villa defeat sparks fresh scrutiny

Amid fines and bans, Chelsea boss Maresca defends his players’ discipline after Villa defeat sparks fresh scrutiny

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has reasserted his views that his team does not have a disciplinary problem despite five yellow cards being dished out to Chelsea players by referee Stuart Atwell in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. “Again, we need to analyse every yellow card. But I didn’t have the feeling [against Villa] that there was a disciplinary problem,” said Maresca, defending his team. Maresca himself was served his second touchline ban of the season during the Aston Villa game, had to watch from the back of the press box following an accumulation of too many yellow cards of his own. But he still continues to insist that Chelsea does not have an issue with ill discipline. Interesting to note that Chelsea have twice been handed FA fines this season for accumulating too many bookings within a single game. A £25,000 fine came after The Blues’ defeat to Manchester United in September, and a £50,000 fine followed their 2-2 draw at Newcastle before Christmas. Chelsea were one yellow away from a third fine, worth …

‘I think it’s a tradition’: Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca says team will give guard of honour to champions Liverpool | Football News

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said that his team will give a guard of honour to champions Liverpool when they come for an away tie at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Last week, Liverpool had sealed a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title when they took an unassailable 15-point lead over second-placed Arsenal with four games to spare. “I think it’s a tradition, it’s something you have to do and we want to do. First of all, they won the league, so they deserve that, and hopefully we can be there (as champions) very soon. I don’t think we need that to understand how good it is to win the Premier League. We know that it’s something very nice. But for sure when you are there, probably in their mind (the players) are thinking ‘I would like one day to be there’,” Maresca told reporters. Before this season’s triumph, Liverpool had won the title in 2019/20 with seven games to spare and every team they faced until the end of the season — Manchester City, Aston Villa, Brighton …

Chelsea Inch Closer To UEFA Champions League Qualification With 1-0 Win vs Everton

Chelsea Inch Closer To UEFA Champions League Qualification With 1-0 Win vs Everton

Chelsea boosted their bid to qualify for the Champions League as Nicolas Jackson ended his 13-game goal drought to seal a crucial 1-0 win against Everton on Saturday. Jackson struck in the first half at Stamford Bridge to get back on the scoresheet for the first time since December. The much-maligned Senegal forward’s 10th goal of the season was enough to lift Enzo Maresca‘s side into fourth place in the Premier League. The Blues’ second successive Premier League win was vital to their attempt to finish in the top five. Chelsea will drop to fifth place if Newcastle beat third-bottom Ipswich later on Saturday, but Jackson’s winner ensured they remain in the hunt to return to the Champions League with four games left. Despite the much-needed result, it was another nervous afternoon for Maresca, who insisted this week that his first season at Chelsea has not been a failure after criticism of the Italian’s conservative tactics. Maresca barely celebrated last weekend’s 2-1 win at Fulham, leaving the pitch immediately after the final whistle …

Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Slams “Unfair” Scheduling After Premier League Draw vs Brentford

Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Slams “Unfair” Scheduling After Premier League Draw vs Brentford

Enzo Maresca insisted Chelsea’s “unfair” schedule forced him to drop out-of-form forward Cole Palmer for Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Brentford. Maresca’s side had 24 hours less than Brentford to prepare for the west London derby after beating Tottenham 1-0 on Thursday. England star Palmer was eventually sent on by Maresca after an hour, but he was unable to break the deadlock, lifting his best chance over the crossbar in stoppage-time. Although Palmer has struggled for much of his second season with Chelsea — failing to score in his last 12 games in all competitions — Maresca was adamant it was the fixture list that was behind his axing against Brentford. “We prepared the game in the way it was. We played a demanding game Thursday night,” the Italian said. “A tricky game, a sunny day, the pitch was dry, they tried to kill the tempo, but we did more than enough to win the game. The only thing we missed was the goal. “We played Thursday night so not all of them were …

‘Probably since I arrived, that is the worst performance’: Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca after his side lose 3-0 to Brighton | Football News

‘Probably since I arrived, that is the worst performance’: Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca after his side lose 3-0 to Brighton | Football News

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca was furious with the side after they lost 3-0 to Brighton in the Premier League on Friday, calling it the worst performance since he arrived at the club. This is the second loss Chelsea have suffered to Brighton in one week with the Seagulls knocking Chelsea out of the FA Cup. “Probably since I arrived, that is the worst performance, especially in the moment we are in. We are fourth in the league, and winning tonight, you can go one point from third and make the gap to the rest bigger, and the performance is not one you want to offer, so we are very upset and sorry for the fans that were here,” Marseca said to Sky Sports. “”For half an hour, I think we were in control but after this moment (Mitoma’s goal) we looked like we could concede chances easily, and we struggled to create chances,” the 45-year-old Italian explained.“The reason why is because of the injuries in this moment, especially with the strikers … important players are …

“Not Focused On Title Race”: Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Downbeat After Shock Defeat To Ipswich

“Not Focused On Title Race”: Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Downbeat After Shock Defeat To Ipswich

Enzo Maresca admitted Chelsea should not think about challenging for the Premier League title after lowly Ipswich beat the Blues 2-0 at Portman Road on Monday. Maresca’s side were rocked by Liam Delap’s early penalty and a second-half goal from former Chelsea winger Omari Hutchinson. Chelsea’s second successive defeat after their Boxing Day loss against Fulham left them without a win in their last three matches. The west Londoners had emerged as surprise title contenders after an eight-match winning run in all competitions. But Maresca had insisted throughout that spell that Chelsea’s inexperienced squad do not have what it takes to win the title in his first season after arriving from Leicester. And the Italian’s prediction looks spot on after a shock result in Suffolk that leaves Chelsea in fourth place, 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. “We focus game by game. We are not focused on title race or those things,” Maresca said. “It was a strange game. We had many chances but we could do many …
