3 AIADMK MLAs’ resignations accepted while EPS alleges ‘horse-trading’ by Vijay’s TVK: What next for the rebels?

Even as AIADMK chief Edapaddi K Palaniswami (EPS) alleged “horse-trading” and “backstabbing”, Tamil Nadu assembly speaker JCD Prabhakar on Monday accepted the resignations of three of his party’s MLAs, Sathyabama, Maragatham Kumaravel, and Jayakumar, among those who had recently rebelled to support the new government led by actor-politician and now-CM Vijay’s party TVK. (PTI File Photo) They are set to join the TVK formally, and may be its candidates in bypolls that’ll now be held for their seats. Speaking to reporters, the speaker said that the resignations were found to be in order as per rules and were submitted in person. Sathyabama is MLA from Dharapuram MLA; M Kumaravel from Madhuranthakam; and Jayakumar from Perundurai. “MLAs must submit their resignation letters in their own handwriting and present them personally. If this procedure is not followed, an inquiry may be conducted. As they submitted the letters directly in person, a decision was taken immediately,” speaker JCD Prabhakar …

As Vijay gets backing of half of AIADMK MLAs, why this suits BJP just fine | Political Pulse News

With the support by 25 rebel AIADMK leaders to the C Joseph Vijay-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu during the floor test Wednesday, the split in the party is formal. However, the worry among some quarters in the ruling TVK is that while on the face of it its government is more secure, the AIADMK faction backing it may owe its loyalty to Delhi, leaving the Vijay ministry vulnerable to pressures. With first-time AIADMK MLA Leema Rose Martin seemingly swinging the MLAs away from Edappadi K Palaniswamy’s leadership, there is also apprehension that the door has been opened for lottery baron Santiago Martin to stretch his influence across the administration. Leema is Santiago’s wife, while their son-in-law Aadhav Arjun is a close Vijay comrade and a minister in the TVK government. According to sources, Leema too may get a place in the Cabinet. The unexpected development has also reopened nearly every unresolved question in the AIADMK since J Jayalalithaa’s death: over Palaniswami or EPS’s authority, over ally-turned-foe-turned ally BJP’s long shadow over the party, and …

Floor test will be smooth; have received letters from EPS, Velumani factions: Speaker

You are assuming office as Speaker at a time when the ruling TVK does not enjoy an independent majority in the House and the Opposition is also numerically strong. How do you propose to navigate your role? It is by the grace of God that Mr. Vijay has won. Our leader is going to prove his majority on Wednesday. So, I do not see any challenge. While you bring considerable legislative experience, a majority of the members are first-time legislators with limited exposure to Assembly procedures and rules. Do you foresee any challenges on this front? Would you organise orientation for them? Yes. Very soon there will be an orientation programme for the first-time legislators. I am sure all the youngsters will pick up very easily. They are very shrewd and they understand whenever we talk to them. They understand the procedures. It is not difficult for us. They will definitely do better than what you expect. What is your advice to the first-time legislators? They must go to the [Assembly] library and read. In …

AIADMK faction supports Vijay’s TVK after rift with EPS: ‘We accept people’s mandate’

Just days after actor-turned-politician and newly-appointed chief minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, was scrambling for support to form government in the state, AIADMK leader CV Shanmugham said on Tuesday that a faction of the party has decided to extend support to him. CV Shanmugham claimed that they have majority of the support from party MLAs and have decided to extend support to TVK. (Screenshot/X/@ANI) Shanmugham’s remarks come amid reports of rift within AIADMK, particularly with party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, also known as EPS, over whether or not to support Vijay. However, Shanmugham claimed that his faction has the majority of party MLAs who have decided to support TVK. ‘We accept people’s mandate’ A total of 47 candidates won from AIADMK in the recently held Tamil Nadu polls. Tamil Nadu’s Nitish Kumar or assertive chief? Edappadi Palaniswami confronts a battle of perceptions

Tamil Nadu’s Nitish Kumar or assertive chief? Edappadi Palaniswami confronts a battle of perceptions

Political narratives, if left unchallenged, can tilt the balance in elections. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami appears more cognisant of this than anyone else in the electoral field in Tamil Nadu this election season. Ever since he reluctantly returned to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) last April at the behest of the BJP’s principal poll strategist and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Palaniswami has been under attack from his rivals, chiefly from the ruling DMK and its allies. Over the past few years, the DMK front has built a strong political narrative projecting the AIADMK leadership as being subservient to the BJP and the Narendra Modi-led Union government. This perception was bolstered by the decision of the erstwhile AIADMK government, under both O. Panneerselvam and Mr. Palaniswami, to embrace certain Central schemes that Jayalalithaa, their predecessor, had strongly opposed during her lifetime. This included the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY), which Tamil Nadu joined in January 2017, just a month after her death. Poll framed as Tamil Nadu vs Delhi In recent times, …

Claiming that the DMK will not return to the seat of power, he said the only achievement of the DMK regime rests on borrowing about “ ₹5 lakh crore” and burdening the people. Levelling several corruption allegations against the DMK regime, Palaniswami listed the ED’s claim of ₹1,000 crore TASMAC liquor scam. He was accompanied by ally BJP’s senior leader Tamilisai Soundararajan. “The people have …
