Movie Review: Immigration, sex and power in erotic thriller ‘Dreams,’ with Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain takes on one of her most daring roles in “Dreams,” a torrid erotic thriller about power, obsession, art and immigration. Re-teaming with filmmaker Michel Franco , she plays a San Francisco socialite entangled in a tempestuous affair with a talented Mexican ballet dancer, played by Isaac Hernández. Her character Jennifer, the well-heeled daughter of a powerful man, is like Shiv Roy before she went to the dark side; Or, rather, realized she was there all along. Movie Review: Immigration, sex and power in erotic thriller ‘Dreams,’ with Jessica Chastain “Dreams,” which opens in limited release Friday, creatively explores ideas about U.S. relations with Mexican immigrants through the ever-shifting power dynamics between Fernando and Jennifer. It’s both captivating and bleak, with a series of sexual encounters that can only be described as feral — “Wuthering Heights” wishes it could have hit the ravenous peaks of Fernando and Jennifer together. Franco opens his film not on these two, but on a semitruck in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere. All we …

Customs can’t confiscate body massager because it could used as erotic toy: Bombay HC | Mumbai news

The Bombay high court on Wednesday upheld an order passed by the Central Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal, ordering the release of some consignments of body massagers confiscated by the Commissioner of Customs. The commissioner had held that the imported goods could also be used as “adult erotic toys” and were, therefore, prohibited. The Commissioner had also imposed penalties on three traders for importing the “prohibited” goods. (File photo) “Merely because the goods can be subjected to an alternative use, of the nature the Commissioner contemplated, this can never be the test to hold that the goods were prohibited when they otherwise satisfied the test of goods which could be imported and sold,” said the division bench of Justice GS Kulkarni and Justice Kishore C Sant. Thank You For Coming Review: More Erratic Than Erotic

Bhumi, Shibani and Dolly in a still from the film. (Courtesy: YouTube) At under two hours, Karan Boolani’s Thank You for Coming is by no stretch of the imagination a long film. But the frothy jabber-fest of a sex comedy, written by Radhika Anand and stand-up comic Prashasti Singh, quickly outlives its welcome. The film not only fails to rid itself of its flabby frivolity but it also makes the audience wade through massive amounts of verbiage that often lapses into unintelligible blabber. Laboured, hackneyed and exhausting, Thank You for Coming makes the same point over and over again until it has absolutely nothing, fresh or otherwise, left to say. It takes an eternity to find some sort of rhythm. When it eventually does – the film’s second half is far better than the first, which isn’t necessarily saying much given how wayward the kick-off is – it moves forward (and sometimes even backwards) only in fits and starts, goes into repetitive loops, froths at the mouth and gets exceedingly antsy.   More erratic than erotic, …

Fair Play review: Chloe Domont’s erotic financial drama is an instant classic

Fair Play begins and ends with blood. Chloe Domont’s blistering directorial debut, that premiered at the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance this year, also features one of the most shocking sex scenes that will certainly emerge as the most talked-about aspects as it prepares itself for release (Netflix bought the global rights for a $20 million deal.) Yet, none of these prerogatives can prepare you for the hydrogen-bomb of a film that is Fair Play. It is one of those breakout films that feels like a classic even on the first watch. (Also read: Magazine Dreams review: Elijah Bynum’s powerful character study is a volcanic mix of Travis Bickle and Jake LaMotta) When Emily (Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor) discovers that Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) has been planning to surprise her with a proposal, she is the one who promptly says yes. They are young and beautiful, and run away from the party to reach their modest New York apartment which they share. Yet, as we soon realize, it not just the only thing that these two young …
