Uttam Kumar Reddy said. In a meeting to review the progress of irrigation projects in combined Khammam district on Thursday, he said that the focus would be on completing the pending works so that the benefits reached farmers and people at the earliest. This erstwhile Zamorin, a patron of arts and literature, remains a forgotten figure in history

Manavikrama Ettan Thampuran Unesco’s ‘City of Literature’ tag has spurred a flurry of activities in Kozhikode, but very few people remember a key literary figure from the city, who also ruled the erstwhile Calicut as its Zamorin. Manavikrama Ettan Thampuran, also known as Vidwan Ettan Thampuran and ‘Kavirajakumara’, was a Sanskrit scholar, writer, and poet, who published around 50 works in Malayalam and Sanskrit. He also authored Carnatic musical compositions. Born in 1845 at the Padinjare Kovilakam, Mankavu, one of the three branches of the Zamorin dynasty, he became the head of the family in 1912. He retired in 1915 and passed away a year later. Poet Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer in his Kerala Sahitya Charitram, the history of Malayalam literature, devoted a chapter on him, calling the Zamorin a patron of arts who was passionately involved in discovering, promoting, and encouraging budding talents. Manmadhan Ullattil, his great-grandson and history enthusiast, says that Ettan Thampuran bridged the gap between Sanskrit and Malayalam. Vallathol Narayana Menon and V.C. Balakrishna Panikkar were among the poets he mentored. …

BC Commission to hold public hearings in erstwhile 10 district headquarters from October 24

The Telangana Backward Classes (BC) Commission has decided to conduct a statewide tour and hold public hearings in the 10 former district headquarters, likely starting October 24. A notification regarding this will be released soon. The BC Commission convened a meeting at its office in Khairatabad on Monday (October 14, 2024) to formulate an action plan in line with the recent government orders issued on October 9, outlining the Commission’s terms of reference. Principal Secretary of the Planning Department Sandeep Kumar Sultania, who was a special invitee, briefed the Commission on the preparations for conducting the caste survey in the State. It was decided that the survey would be conducted under the supervision of the BC Commission in coordination with the Planning Department. As per government orders, the BC Commission is tasked with determining the percentage of reservations to be provided to BCs in local bodies.
