At least seven people were injured in a fresh gunfight between armed groups of the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities in Ringui village of Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Monday, officials said. (PTI File) Police said the gunfight erupted at around 5am when suspected armed Kuki militants allegedly launched an attack on Ringui, a Tangkhul Naga village located around 25km from Luichong Maiphei (LM) police station. At least seven people were injured in the exchange of fire, including six Tangkhul Naga individuals and one Kuki individual. Police officials told HT at around 3 pm that “the gunfight is continuing and we are not able to reach the spot. However, necessary steps will be taken up to control the gunfight. We also heard gunshots from sophisticated assault rifles, but which armed group is using is yet to be confirmed”. The Manipur government on Sunday extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services, including VPN access, in five districts of the ethnic violence-hit state for two more days. The ethnic violence in Manipur has claimed at least 260 lives and displaced around 60,000 people since May 2023. (Sourced) The services were suspended, and curfew was imposed in parts of the state after two people were killed and 29 others injured on Tuesday as security forces allegedly fired at a mob that stormed a paramilitary camp in Bishnupur. The mob was protesting the deaths of a five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister in an explosion. Protests have been held across five districts after the outbreak of fresh violence. Three more civilians have been killed since. The curfew was relaxed for 10 hours from 5am to 3pm in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal on Sunday. Union agriculture and rural development minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 new houses for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Manipur under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G). Vungzagin Valte, a prominent Kuki-Zo legislator and former Manipur minister, passed away at a private hospital in Gurugram on Friday following a nearly three-year battle with injuries sustained during the 2023 ethnic violence. He was 63. (X/AShardaDevi) Valte, a BJP MLA from Thanlon assembly seat in Pherzawl district, was brutally assaulted by a mob in Imphal on May 4, 2023, when he was returning from a meeting with then-chief minister N. Biren Singh, just as the state spiralled into ethnic conflict. The three-time MLA had been in and out of critical care since the assault. Initially sent to Delhi after the 2023 attack, he underwent extensive treatment for over a year before returning to Manipur in April last year. However, his health took a turn for the worse and was recently airlifted to Delhi for admission to a prominent Gurugram hospital. Imphal/Churachandpur: A statewide shutdown and mass gatherings marked the second anniversary of the ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki and Zomi tribes of Manipur on Saturday, amid demands for free and safe movement of all residents, and a separate administrative arrangement. Shutdowns, observed in both the Meitei-dominant Imphal valley and the Kuki-Zo-dominated hill districts, brought life to a grinding halt across the state. While the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) enforced the shutdown in the valley, the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) led similar actions in the hill areas. In the state capital Imphal, COCOMI organised a public convention at Khuman Lampak Stadium, where speakers urged the central government to ensure the “free and safe movement” of all residents in the state. New Delhi: Members of the Kuki and Zomi tribes and the Meitei community held separate demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday to mark the completion of two years since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Dressed in black, the Kuki protesters mourned the loss of those killed in the violence and reiterated their demand for a separate administration for their community. The protest was organised by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) and the Kuki-Zo Women’s Forum, Delhi (KZWFD).
