Evening showers on Saturday left several arterial and sub-arterial roads across the city waterlogged, leading to traffic snarls, vehicle breakdowns, and disruptions during peak hours. The situation was particularly severe in the eastern parts of the city, including Whitefield, Mahadevapura, and Varthur. HAL Airport Road, connecting to Varthur Road, was among the worst-hit stretches, with commuters struggling through knee-deep waterlogging. The severe inundation also led to multiple vehicle breakdowns, causing prolonged congestion. Even ambulance movement was hit. Commuters took to X to share their ordeal and questioned the functioning of the East Corporation despite it being the richest civic body. A traffic police official told The Hindu that an overflowing stormwater drain in the vicinity compounded the problem. However, a corporation official explained that stormwater drain (SWD) works were currently underway in the area. Called as a “citizen lounge-cum-new-age learning centre”, the space was inaugurated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday. It will function as a community learning centre after public hours, providing a conducive environment for students and job aspirants. The lounge-cum-learning centre has a seating capacity for 40 people and is equipped with air-conditioners, computers with Wi-Fi connection, books ranging from novels to ones for competitive exams. Vidarbha is set to witness a mixed spell of intense heat, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next five days, according to the latest forecast issued on Sunday by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).  The region may see a rise in maximum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours, followed by largely stable conditions thereafter. Monsoon progress and synoptic situation As per the IMD’s synoptic update, the northern limit of the southwest monsoon continues to advance steadily across central and eastern India, with favourable conditions for further progress into Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and parts of Chhattisgarh over the next two to three days.  A persistent seasonal trough extending from central Pakistan to Bangladesh across multiple states is also influencing weather conditions over central India.
