Gymkhana row: ‘Can take land whenever…’ Union Minister on Delhi elite club eviction move

Gymkhana row: ‘Can take land whenever…’ Union Minister on Delhi elite club eviction move

Published on Jun 02, 2026 05:58 pm IST Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has defended the Centre’s decision to reclaim the Delhi Gymkhana Club premises, saying rapid urbanisation and the shrinking availability of developable land have made such provisions increasingly necessary. The remarks come amid a controversy over the government’s May 22 directive asking the club to hand over its premises to the Land and Development Office by June 5. The Centre invoked a public purpose clause in the original lease deed, stating that the property is located in a highly sensitive and strategic area. According to the government, the land is required to strengthen defence infrastructure and meet public security needs. Khattar reiterated that re-entry clauses are an important tool for governments as cities expand and land resources become more constrained.   Home / Videos / Gymkhana row: ‘Can take land whenever…’ Union Minister on Delhi elite club eviction move Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Kerala’s Pariyathukavu residents hope government intervention will put an end to eviction threat

Kerala’s Pariyathukavu residents hope government intervention will put an end to eviction threat

On a cloudy evening early in the third week of May, a police officer from the Special Branch of the Ernakulam police reached out to some residents of Pariyathukavu, a Dalit settlement close to Malayidamthuruth, around 10 km from Perumbavoor. He had an unpleasant message to deliver. “We need to implement the court order without fail. The court has given us the ultimatum,” he stoically told the anxious residents. He was referring to the execution of an eviction order which has been pending for a while. The developments have cast uncertainty over the future of seven families, all relatives, who live in the Pariyathukavu settlement, along the Periyar Valley Canal. Moderate houses with plastered walls and concrete roofs situated on either side of a sloppy mud lane, bordered with thick green bushes sporting crimson hibiscus flowers, make up the Pariyathukavu settlement. Most of the residents say they have been living in the settlement for decades. 14 eviction attempts Till now, the residents, backed by some political parties, had managed to avoid the execution of a …

Resume Delhi Race Club eviction proceedings: Delhi HC

A division bench of the Delhi high court on Tuesday ordered the resumption of eviction proceedings initiated by the estate officer against the 53.4-acre Delhi Race Club. Resume Delhi Race Club eviction proceedings: Delhi HC A bench of chief justice DK Upadhyaya and justice Tejas Karia observed that the single judge’s April 24 order, which restrained the estate officer from proceeding pursuant to the April 17, 2026, showcause notice issued under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act (PP Act), was passed without assigning reasons, even for the namesake. The showcause notice required the club to explain why an eviction order should not be passed regarding the public premises it occupied. In the 34-page verdict, the judges noted that while the single judge discussed the respective cases of the parties, the order merely stated that the matter required consideration, given the chequered history of the litigation and the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case, before granting interim protection without further reasoning. The bench held that such a course was impermissible because the interim …
