Security ramped up outside strongrooms in Kolkata ahead of counting on May 4

Ahead of result day of West Bengal Assembly Elections, security was heightened outside several polling stations in Kolkata. Heavy force was deployed outside the strongrooms in Kolkata, which included Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls’ High School in Bhabanipur, Netaji Indoor Stadium, and several others. Apart from managing security of strongrooms, the security was also increased outside the Chief Electoral Officer’s office and Falta assembly constituency, where locals protested alleged threats and beatings by TMC leaders on Saturday. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed repolling in all 285 polling stations, including auxiliary polling stations, in the Falta assembly seat between 7 AM and 6 PM on May 21. Counting of votes will take place on May 24. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued several directives to presiding officers at polling booths, particularly linked to tampering with the candidate buttons, sources in the poll panel said. Birbhum: Officials stack Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines. (PTI) The poll panel has asked officers to ensure that the candidate buttons are clearly visible and not covered with tape, glue or any other material. The ECI has also said that chemicals, including colour, ink or perfume cannot be used on the buttons to reveal the secrecy of the votes, adding that such incidents can be considered as EVM tampering. Presiding officers have been asked to immediately report such incidents at polling booths to the respective returning officers. “All such cases are likely to fall under Tampering/Interfering with Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), which is an electoral offence,” ECI told officers, according sources inside the poll panel. Amid INDIA bloc’s concerns over EVM tampering in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections, Maharashtra’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Kulkarni said in all 1,440 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) were verified during the last month’s state assembly polls with their results matching perfectly with Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) counts. A VVPAT is connected with an EVM through a printer port, which records vote data and counters in a paper slip to verify the correct recording of vote by the machine. VVPATs are intended as an independent verification system for voting machines. Noting that a transparent process is followed with the involvement of candidates and their agents at every stage of the voting process, the Election Commission (EC) has invited a Congress delegation to meet it on December 3 (Tuesday) over its apprehensions concerning the voting percentage in Maharashtra elections. Congress had also raised some apprehensions about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) process after the Haryana assembly polls. The poll panel has said it will review all legitimate concerns of Congress and provide a written response after hearing the party’s delegation. Ahmedabad: A Congress candidate in Gujarat dramatically tied a “noose” around his neck to protest what he alleged was tampering of EVMs or voting machines during counting. Bharatbhai Veljibhai Solanki, the Congress candidate in Gandhidham, first launched a sit-in protest at the counting centre, then tied his scarf like a noose around his neck, in a threatening manner. Mr Solanki was trailing behind the BJP’s Malti Kisor Maheshwari. The BJP has won a record eighth consecutive term in Gujarat with an all-time high tally of 157 seats in the 182-member assembly. The Congress will end up with less than 20 seats in its worst-ever performance in Gujarat, where it held the previous record of 149 seats in 1985.
