Kerala University Syndicate meeting witnesses heated exchanges

A meeting of the of the University of Kerala on Monday witnessed heated exchanges as the Left Democratic Front (LDF)-backed members argued with Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal over unresolved decisions from previous meetings. The LDF-aligned members criticised the Vice-Chancellor for not approving a list to appoint 12 contract lecturers, despite a favourable decision made a month earlier. The list, prepared by a selection committee, aimed at appointing lecturers on a contract basis in 11 subjects for the university’s four-year undergraduate programmes. The debate intensified as the Syndicate, divided between the LDF and the Bharatiya Janata Party members, continued to spar over various issues. One point of contention was a longstanding demand raised by S. Nazeeb, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kerala Studies, to have his 18 months of contract service at the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit recognised as ‘past service’ for promotion under the Career Advancement Scheme. The Vice-Chancellor maintained that the request violated university norms and hence it was referred to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan for further consideration. Another controversial issue …

‘You’re coming too slow’: Yashasvi Jaiswal exchanges words with Mitchell Starc | Cricket News

If it was Shubman Gill in Dharamshala who riled up England legend James Anderson by asking “When is he planning to retire,” it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who sledged Australian speedster Mitchell Starc on Day 2 of the Perth Test for “bowling slow.” In the 19th over of the match, Jaiswal swiped across the line and hit Starc for a boundary. Former Australian cricketer Kerry O’Keeffe lauded Jaiswal’s wrist work. “The cheat sheets would have said don’t get too straight to this young bloke or you will go the distance,” O’Keeffe said on commentary. “This is a terrific cricket shot. Starc got a little too straight, and he is one of the best whippers in world cricket. Fantastic cricket from Jaiswal.” Former England captain Michael Vaughan predicted that the shot would fire Starc up. “He is just working with the angle, and it’s a beautiful pick-up,” Vaughan said. “It’s a big boundary out there, one bounce four. This could turn into a bit of chin music. I’ve seen Mitchell Starc bowl some explosive spells bowling the …

Deepfakes Can Fool Facial Recognition on Crypto Exchanges

Deepfakes Can Fool Facial Recognition on Crypto Exchanges

Generative AI deepfakes can stoke misinformation or manipulate images of real people for unsavory purposes. They can also help threat actors pass two-factor authentication, according to an Oct. 9 research report from Cato Networks’ CTRL Threat Research. AI generates videos of fake people looking into a camera The threat actor profiled by CTRL Threat Research — known by the handle ProKYC — uses deepfakes to forge government IDs and spoof facial recognition systems. The attacker sells the tool on the dark web to aspiring fraudsters, whose ultimate goal is to infiltrate cryptocurrency exchanges. Some exchanges require a potential account holder to both submit a government ID and appear live in video. With generative AI, the attacker easily creates a realistic-looking image of a person’s face. ProKYC’s deepfake tool then slots that picture into a fake drivers license or passport. The crypto exchanges’ facial recognition tests require brief proof that the person is present in front of the camera. The deepfake tool spoofs the camera and creates an AI-created image of a person looking left and …

Sweden Classifies Some Crypto Exchanges as ‘Professional Money Launderers’

Sweden has classified some crypto exchanges and crypto-related service providers as ‘professional money launderers’ claiming that these platforms are often used by criminals to launder proceeds from all types of crimes via cryptocurrency. In the official notice, the authorities have identified four types of crypto exchanges that have been designated as professional money launderers (PMLs). The Swedish Police Authority and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Sweden have collectively finalised this classification of crypto exchanges in the country. In a report compiled by Sweden’s FIU, the authority states that the ability to launder large volumes of assets between crypto wallets internationally, without the oversight of an intermediary, has drawn criminals towards the crypto sector. “The assessment from FIU Sweden is that there is an increasing demand for PML from organised crime and that the services they provide are pivotal for the criminal economy,” the report said. “There are also individual crypto exchange providers that are more tightly connected to criminal networks, who do not typically advertise their services publicly.” The Swedish authorities have divided illegal …
