Meta is trying to block ex-employee’s book alleging misconduct and harassment

An arbitrator has decided in favor of Meta in a case the company brought against Sarah Wynn-Williams, the former Meta employee who wrote a memoir published this week detailing alleged claims of misconduct at the company. Macmillan Publishers and its imprint that published the memoir, Flatiron Books, were also named as respondents. The memoir, titled Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism, details alleged claims of sexual harassment, including by current policy chief Joel Kaplan, who was her boss, according to NBC News. In the decision, the arbitrator said Wynn-Williams must stop making disparaging remarks against Meta and its employees and, to the extent that she can control, cease further promoting the book, further publishing the book, and further repetition of previous disparaging remarks. The decision also says she must retract disparaging remarks from where they have appeared. ‘Retirement dues not charity but right of ex-employees,’ HC directs BEST to pay 30% of total dues worth Rs 180 cr within 3 months | Mumbai News

The Bombay High Court on Friday said it was ‘unacceptable’ that the majority of retired employees of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) are still waiting for their retirement dues, adding that the payment of dues was not a charity but right of ex-employees. In observing so, the court directed the BEST Undertaking to pay 30% of dues (nearly Rs 180 crore of Rs 600 crore) of each retired employee within three months. The court said it was open for BEST Undertaking to seek financial assistance from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with which it is ‘intrinsically connected’ and it was upto civic body to consider the request. “These two Authorities will keep in mind that the retirement dues are not a charity and are a right of the employees and that both these Authorities will have to act as model employers,” the bench noted. A division bench of Justices Nitin M Jamdar and M M Sathaye passed an order on Friday in a batch of pleas by ex-employees of BEST Undertaking ‘in representative capacity’ …

Twitter on Tuesday was accused by 100 former employees of various legal violations stemming from Elon Musk’s takeover of the company, including targeting women for layoffs and failing to pay promised severance. Shannon Liss-Riordan, a lawyer for the workers, said she had filed 100 demands for arbitration against Twitter that make similar claims to four class action lawsuits pending in California federal court. The workers all signed agreements to bring legal disputes against the company in arbitration rather than court, Liss-Riordan said, which means they will likely be barred from participating in the class actions. Twitter laid off roughly 3,700 employees in early November in a cost-cutting measure by Musk, who paid $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,37,465 crore) to acquire the social media platform, and hundreds more subsequently resigned. The arbitration demands accuse Twitter of sex discrimination, breach of contract, and illegally terminating employees who were on medical or parental leave. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Liss-Riordan said her firm has spoken with hundreds of other ex-Twitter employees and intends to …
