At a time when weight-loss drugs dominate transformation conversations, actor-politician Ravi Kishan says he relied on dietary changes and exercise to lose 18kg. (Before and after) Ravi Kishan in feature film Laapataa Ladies and currently in a slimmer avatar “I was 90kg and dropped to 72kg. Prepare kar raha hoon apni body ko, ripped kar de raha hoon, shrink kar raha hoon,” the 57-year-old tells us. Political duties and visits to his Gorakhpur constituency led to some weight gain, he says, but he has now returned to a fruit-heavy diet to regain a leaner frame. He says, “I lost 18kg by changing how I eat.” His changing screen appearances prompted the transformation. “Laapataa Ladies (2024) required me to look heavy, in Mirzapur: The Movie I will look lean, while in Naagzilla I have a super-fit body. When you are in your 50s, it’s not easy, but food changes can help, as 70-80% is what you eat and the rest is exercise,” he says. Kishan clarifies that his regimen is flexible rather than strictly fruit-only. “It’s …

Polls in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir a ‘cosmetic electoral exercise’ to mask illegal occupation: MEA

India on Tuesday strongly criticised Pakistan for conducting the “so-called” assembly elections in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), describing the exercise as a “cosmetic electoral exercise” aimed at masking its “illegal occupation” of the region and concealing alleged human rights violations, news agency IANS reported. Addressing a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India’s longstanding position that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas under Pakistan’s control, are integral and inalienable parts of India. Madras HC’s appeal on online relationships urges youngsters to exercise caution

The Madras High Court on Tuesday issued a “public appeal” urging youngsters and their families to exercise “extreme caution while entering into online” or “technology-facilitated” relationships. The court urged vigilance in the digital world. (Shutterstock) Justices Anand Venkatesh and KK Ramakrishnan issued the appeal in English, Tamil, and Hindi while dismissing an appeal of a man convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a case of rape and sexual assault. The judges, presiding at the Madurai bench of the High Court, said they were issuing the appeal or advisory in the interest of both those disproportionately targeted and society more broadly, given the rise in technology. They urged them to exercise vigilance in the digital world The bench said a moment of misplaced trust should never become a lifetime of suffering. It regretted that time constraints prevented translating the appeal into every regional language. “No matter how deep the affection, trust, or promise of confidentiality may appear, intimate photographs or videos should never be shared with anyone through electronic means.” The court said once such …

UN Special Rapporteurs flag ‘discrimination’ in SIR exercise, seek government’s response | India News

Three United Nations-appointed experts have written to the Centre expressing concerns over alleged discrimination towards minorities during the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, particularly in West Bengal, and seeking information on the steps taken to ensure the process aligns with India’s obligations under international human rights law. The UN’s Special Rapporteurs on minority issues, on promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and on freedom of religion or belief — Nicolas Levrat, Irene Khan and Nazila Ghanea respectively —wrote to the government on May 1. They sought the government’s comments on allegations that Bengali and Muslim electors were targeted during the SIR and asked for details of steps taken to ensure that eligible voters were not prevented from participating in the 2026 Assembly polls. “We are particularly concerned by the way in which the SIR process has been conducted, notably the reported removal of millions of voters’ names from electoral rolls, potentially affecting a great number of Muslims and persons of Bengali descent, as well as …

How little exercise can you get away with?

How little exercise can you get away with?

FEW THINGS are as unambiguously good for you as exercise. Besides making you fitter and stronger, it cuts your risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, many types of cancer and more. Even tiny bursts of activity have measurable benefits But how much of the cure-all do you really need? The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as easy jogging or cycling, and two sessions a week of strength training. Many still fall short. In America, for instance, fewer than half of adults meet the minimum recommendations for just cardiovascular exercise alone. Those who hate pounding the pavements need not despair, though. Even a little exercise is better than none. And a growing pile of evidence suggests that might be true even with very small amounts of exercise indeed: potentially just a few minutes a day. Scientists have long known that the returns to exercise are not constant. The biggest benefits come from doing any at all. Doing lots is better than doing just a little, but …

Protocol violations alleged as SIR exercise enters third day in Karnataka

The Booth Level Officers in Ramanagara Town Municipal Council conducted what JD(S) on its official X handle described as an SIR camp. | Photo Credit: K. MURALI KUMAR Even as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls entered its third day in Karnataka, allegations of violations of the Election Commission’s protocol during the door-to-door enumeration exercise surfaced from different parts of the State. In one instance, flagged by the Janata Dal (Secular) on its official X handle, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in Ward No. 23 of the Ramanagara Town Municipal Council were seen conducting what the party described as an SIR camp at a wedding hall instead of undertaking the mandated door-to-door distribution and collection of enumeration forms. “The Election Commission’s rules have been completely thrown to the winds in Ramanagara. Instead of going door-to-door to verify voter information and distribute forms, the BLOs are organising an ‘SIR Rally’ by gathering every one at a Kalyana Mantapa in Tipu Nagar, Ward No. 23. Is this not an insult to democracy?” the party said in its …
