Kammatipaadam might be the unsung brutal history of every big city that ever existed | Malayalam News

“Rome wasn’t built in a day.” While this popular adage is often used to emphasise that important and great things cannot be achieved in a short period, a closer look reveals a subtext that is not apparent at first glance. It’s not exactly like “slow and steady wins the race.” While it can be read as an imperialist motto, the adage also conveys that great empires are the result of strenuous effort. If we look at it superficially, we might see only the efforts of the monarchs, the ruling class, and their troops in building an empire. However, in the construction of every Rome, countless lives are displaced, marginalised and invisibilised. And needless to say, they would most likely be indigenous peoples, as we have seen throughout history. Unfortunately, the opulence of the new Romes and the clamour that accompanies them often drown out the cries and prayers of the displaced, relegating them to the far ends. Thus, even though the story of every Rome is also the story of the exiled, the history written …

Just Like That: Why deny Hindu civilization existed to counter political Hindutva?

Just Like That: Why deny Hindu civilization existed to counter political Hindutva?

These days, there is a debate on the word ‘Hindu’. In its place, some people prefer Sanatan Dharma—the eternal faith. Both are valid, but I want to, in particular, respond to those who say that there is no such word as ‘Hindu’, and therefore Hinduism itself, and the civilization that was its consequence, is not an ancient but a relatively modern notion. These days, there is a debate on the word ‘Hindu’. To my mind, such a claim is prima facie facile. If a people, with a verifiable philosophical vision, religious practice, social norms, kinship rules, creative expression, political thought, ethnic overlap and geographical location, have been aware from time immemorial of their unified identity and can differentiate themselves from others on this basis, does a name tag alter the fact of their existence? Most of the ancient religions of the world, which have been identified as such today and given labels to describe them, were not, at the time of their origin, self-consciously aware of—or concerned about—by what name they would be known to …

‘Existed Earlier, Exists Now’: Karnataka Minister Admits ‘Commission’ Culture Amid Contractor Row | India News

Last Updated:February 20, 2026, 17:56 IST The comments have triggered sharp political reactions as the Congress swept to power in 2023 after targeting the previous BJP government over the “40 per cent commission” culture. Karnataka after Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi A political controversy has erupted in Karnataka after Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi acknowledged that the practice of “commissions” or kickbacks continues within the state’s governance system. The minister’s remarks come amid mounting tensions with the Karnataka State Contractors Association (KSCA) announcing a statewide protest on March 6, alleging that the government has failed to clear pending bills amounting to ₹37,370 crore. The association has accused the Congress-led government of presiding over worsening corruption and administrative paralysis, intensifying the political heat around infrastructure projects. ‘It Was There Before, It Will Continue’ Responding to questions on allegations of commission-taking in the Public Works Department (PWD), Jarkiholi made an unusually candid statement. “That’s there. It was there before. It’s there now. It will be there in future. It’s difficult to trace where exactly it happens. Allegations …

She made an enviable debut opposite Malayalam cinema’s heartthrob in hit film, but left without a second outing: ‘People forgot such a person existed’ | Malayalam News

Even if the name Deepa Nayar may not ring a bell immediately, her face would rush to the minds of Malayalees worldwide as soon as they hear the song “Minnaminni Ithiripponne Minnanathellam Ponnalla.” That’s right; we are talking about the adorable scamps Tinu, Vinu, and Anu’s beloved Annie chechi from Priyam (2000). Starring “heartthrob” Kunchacko Boban in the lead role, Priyam was inspired by Mahesh Bhatt’s Aamir Khan-Juhi Chawla starrer Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), which, in itself, was based on the 1958 Hollywood romantic comedy Houseboat. Priyam revolves around a young man, Benny (Kunchako Boban), who starts raising his three niblings, Tinu (Master Arun), Vinu (Master Ashwin Thampi), and Anu (Baby Manjima), after the demise of his sister and her husband. Deepa plays Annie, Benny’s childhood friend. Having not seen her for a long time, Benny initially doesn’t recognise Annie, who has been searching for him for the longest time, and is cold towards her. Thus, she forges a bond with the kids and with their help, Annie slowly begins carving a path …

Sunita Williams reveals the ‘strangest thing’ she has seen in space: ‘I had no idea those things existed’ | Trending News

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently retired after a long career in space exploration, is currently in India and made a candid appearance on entrepreneur Raj Shamani’s podcast. During the conversation, she spoke about her life beyond Earth, reflected on her Indian roots, and shared rare insights from her years spent in orbit. On the podcast, Williams offered a glimpse into what everyday life in space looks like, the challenges, the surprises, and the moments of quiet wonder that come with being an astronaut. When Shamani asked her about the strangest thing she had seen in space, Williams replied, “Two different things that were different or have been different. There’s a lot of communication satellites up there now. And which is great because there’s a lot of communication now on Earth because we have these constellations of satellites. But there is. It was an impression, like, there is a lot of stuff in orbits around the planet.” She went on to add, “The other thing, which was really cool this time, and we were able. …

Deepika Padukone’s 8-hour workday demand shouldn’t be news, says Haq director: ‘Existed for decades now’ | Bollywood News

Deepika Padukone’s 8-hour workday demand shouldn’t be news, says Haq director: ‘Existed for decades now’ | Bollywood News

When Deepika Padukone recently demanded an 8-hour workday on a film set, it raised eyebrows. So much so that almost everyone in the Hindi film industry has since spoken about the issue. While some have said that they don’t look at the clock while they are shooting, and neither does their crew, others, like Deepika, have pointed out that the demand for limited work hours is common practice while negotiating a contract. Recently, Haq director Suparn Varma also weighed in on the same and said that this practice of actors making demands before signing a film has been in existence for decades now and it is during the negotiation stage that the actors and producers often agree upon the work hours, entourage and other paraphernalia that an actor needs. He said that if he were to work with Deepika, and if on a particular day, he needed more time from her, he would make that request well in advance. He added that actors often make such kind of concessions when asked. In a chat shared …

Newly Discovered Oxygen Reaction Existed in Primitive Atmosphere, Sheds Light on Origin of Life

Newly Discovered Oxygen Reaction Existed in Primitive Atmosphere, Sheds Light on Origin of Life

A new method for oxygen formation in carbon dioxide-rich planetary atmospheres has been identified, potentially altering the approach to searching for extraterrestrial life. This discovery demonstrates a unique pathway for molecular oxygen production that may occur without the involvement of biological processes. The finding sheds light on how oxygen could exist in the atmospheres of other planets, challenging conventional assumptions about life detection and atmospheric composition on extraterrestrial worlds. Insights from the Study According to research led by Shan Xi Tian and Jie Hu from the University of Science and Technology of China, a reaction between helium ions (He+) and carbon dioxide (CO2) can result in the formation of molecular oxygen (O2). This mechanism was explored using advanced experimental setups, including time-of-flight mass spectrometry and ion velocity mapping. The reaction pathway was reconstructed under controlled conditions to determine how oxygen could form through abiotic means. Potential Implications for Mars and Beyond As per a Space.com report, the study suggests that this reaction may occur in Mars’ upper atmosphere, given the prevalence of CO2 and helium …

Gwen Stefani Reveals She Didn’t Know Husband Blake Shelton ‘Existed’ Before 2014; Hints at a Possible Country Album Together

Unexpected love is the best kind, and Gwen Stefani corroborates the words on the street for us. In a recent interview, she shared that she wasn’t even slightly aware of her husband Blake Shelton’s existence before meeting him on The Voice set in 2014. Speaking to The Guardian on Thursday, November 14, the No Doubt frontwoman, 55, revealed she didn’t know about the God’s Country singer before their meeting because she never listened to country music. “So while he was super successful, I never knew he existed before I met him,” she told the outlet. However, now that she pays close attention to the genre, Stefani said she fancies the idea of releasing a country record with her husband. “I love singing with him,” she gushed. “He’s very humble and doesn’t realize how good he is. There’s something so attractive about that.” Stefani released her fourth studio album, Bouquets, on Friday, November 15. While some tracks on the disc detail her failed marriage with Gavin Rossdale, others are about her fairytale ending with Shelton—such as Purple Irises, to …

‘Social bullying existed before cyberbullying,’ Sports Psychologist Kriti Monga

In the high-pressure world of sports, where physical prowess often takes center stage, the importance of mental health is sometimes overlooked. However, the mind is just as critical to an athlete’s success as their physical abilities. On this World Mental Health Day, sports psychologist Kriti Monga, who runs a consulting firm that supports athletes’ mental well-being, especially in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana, sheds light on athletes’ often unseen struggles—from coping with performance anxiety and social media scrutiny to handling false accusations and balancing their identity beyond their sport in an exclusive interview with The Bridge. With the growing awareness around mental health in sports, Kriti emphasizes the need for consistent mental conditioning and a strong support system to help athletes navigate the complex challenges of their careers. The role of sports psychology Kriti Monga emphasizes that mental conditioning is crucial for athletes aiming to maintain consistent performance. “Athletes often focus on physical training, but their mental game is just as important,” she explains. One of the key takeaways from Kriti’s work is …

How India’s ‘Other’ Ram Setu, Pamban Bridge, Might Never Have Existed

Advertisement by Head, Wrighton & Co. in Christmas issue of The Engineer, 1914.Courtesy: Arup K. Chatterjee. Legend has it that Ram Setu-better known officially as Adam’s Bridge-is said to have been built by Lord Ram’s army, comprising commander Hanuman and the chief architect Nala. The enchanted structure lies between Dhanushkodi in India’s Tamil Nadu and Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka’s Mannar Island. The epic chapter in the Valmiki Ramayan about the construction of the bridge has inspired generations of artists, cultural thinkers, and institution builders. Fascinatingly, the 19th-century British colonial administration was also inspired by the ancient lore as it mulled over the possibility of bridging India and Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). History Comes Full Circle In Hind Swaraj (1909), Mahatma Gandhi referred to the farseeing ancestors who had built the ‘Shetbandhai’ (Ram Setu/Adam’s Bridge) near Rameswaram to create faraway pilgrimage routes so as to instil patriotism by encouraging people to learn more about the Indic geography since ancient times. Five years later, in 1914, the same colonial administration that had banned Gandhiji’s book heaped praises …
