Ex-Maharashtra Minister Anil Parab acquitted in Dapoli resort case

A special court in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district has acquitted former state minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab in a case linked to alleged illegal construction of a resort and tax irregularities in Dapoli, reported the PTI. Special Judge Prasanna S Chandgude, who hears Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) cases at Khed, delivered the verdict on Tuesday. Apart from Parab, four others — village sarpanch Suresh Shankar Tupe, gramsevak Anant Dnyandev Koli, circle officer Sudhir Shantaram Pardule and sub-divisional officer Jayram Vinayak Deshpande — were also acquitted of all charges, according to the PTI. The case stemmed from a complaint filed in 2021 by former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. The complaint alleged irregularities in property tax assessment and environmental violations related to the construction of a resort at Murud in Dapoli taluka of Ratnagiri district, the news agency reported. According to the prosecution, the Murud gram panchayat had assessed property tax without confirming whether the building was fully completed. The Supreme Court on Monday stayed conviction of former Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate in a cheating and forgery case, reported news agency PTI. A vacation bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Maharashtra government on Kokate`s plea. “Issue notice. In the meanwhile, conviction of petitioner shall remain stayed to the extent that there shall be no disqualification as a member of legislative assembly. However he shall not hold any office of profit,” the bench said, reported PTI. Kokate`s conviction and two-year sentence by a magistrate in February this year were upheld by the Nashik sessions court last Tuesday, holding that he and his brother dishonestly induced the state government to allot them flats. After police registered a kidnapping case following the anonymous call made to the control room, his whereabouts were traced and he was brought back to Pune along with his friends, he said at a hurriedly convened press conference. “Our police control room received a call around 4 pm in which an anonymous caller informed us that Rishiraj was taken away by some unidentified people. Baba Siddiqui described Ratan Tata’s death as the “End of an Era.” Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddiqui was shot dead on Saturday evening in Mumbai. Just two days before his murder, Mr Siddiqui had made his last Instagram post. The politician, who actively used his social media handles to interact with his supporters, had posted a heartfelt tribute to the late industrialist Ratan Tata, who died on October 9 at age 86. Former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi passed away at the age of 86. He was admitted in the ICU of Mumbai’s PD Hinduja Hospital on Wednesday and breathed his last at the private medical facility. His family said that Joshi died at 3am on Friday following prolonged age related health issues. “We will be conducting his last rites at the Shivaji Park crematorium at 3pm prior to which he shall be at his residence from 11am to 2pm,” a statement by his family read. The hospital had said in a statement on Thursday that Joshi (86) was severely ill. The Shiv Sena stalwart was admitted to the same hospital in May last year after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
