India To Send Buddha Relics Discovered In Gujarat To Thailand For Exposition

Bangkok: India will soon send relics of the Buddha, discovered in Devni Mori in northern Gujarat, to Thailand for an exposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this after bilateral talks with Thailand Prime Minister Paentongtran Shinawatra at the Government House here. “I am extremely happy to announce that the Holy Relics found in Aravali, Gujarat in 1960 will also be sent to Thailand for an exposition,” Modi said after he received a copy of the 108 volumes of Tipitaka, the revered collection of Buddhist scriptures, in Pali language, from Paetongtarn. The Prime Minister noted that the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha were sent from India to Thailand last year. “It is a matter of great pleasure that more than four million devotees got the opportunity to pay their tributes,” he said. The Devni Mori relics were found during excavations at the mound known as ‘Bhoja Raja No Terkro’ or the courtyard of King Bhoja in 1960. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said the state government will request the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to invite Pope Francis to visit Goa for the decennial exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier scheduled to be held in Goa in November. After a high-powered committee meeting to oversee the preparations for the 45-day event, Sawant said, “We will be writing to the PMO, who in turn will extend an invitation to the Pope to visit Goa for the exposition. When the Prime Minister had met the Pope, he had also invited him to visit India.” The event is scheduled to be held  from November 21, 2024 to January 5, 2025. In the Budget presented last month, Sawant had announced a budgetary provision of Rs 10 crore for the exposition. Sawant said the government will beautify the Old Goa church complex and upgrade the infrastructure at heritage sites in Old Goa and facilities for the pilgrims from across the world who will be visiting Goa.
