New Delhi Railway station late on Saturday night witnessed a stampede, which killed at least 18 people and left over a dozen injured, officials said. The stampede was preceded by a swell in crowd of passengers waiting to board trains for Prayagraj, where the Mahakumbh is being held. Eyewitnesses said a huge rush at the station led to the stampede with several fainting because of suffocation. In an official statement, the deputy commissioner of police (railway) said platform number 14 was already very crowded when the Prayagraj Express train was waiting there for its departure. An eyewitness, an IAF sergeant recounted that despite announcements and efforts to convince people to avoid gathering in large numbers, the crowd remained unmanageable. Tirupati: Sharing their account of tragic stampede in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati, eyewitnesses have recalled the horrific incident that killed at least six people.  A woman who went to Tirupati with 20 of her family members said, “As soon as the Police officials opened the gate, the pilgrims rushed to purchase tokens. There was no such system for obtaining tokens earlier.” While speaking to the reporters, she said, “A stampede occurred due to the heavy rush. Out of twenty members of my family, six have been injured. We joined the queue at 11 o’clock. While waiting in the queue, we were provided with milk and biscuits. “I was outside the restaurant and a little after 1 p.m., I heard a loud explosion inside. As I rushed inside, I saw smoke and fire near the hand wash area and there was a pungent, burning smell. I do not know how the blast occurred. I saw many people injured and helped rush them to a hospital,” said Sachin Lamani, a security guard with The Rameshwaram Cafe’s Brookfield outlet, where a low-intensity blast occurred on Friday afternoon.
