Ahmedabad police have arrested a gang of six men from Madhya Pradesh, apprehending them red-handed as they were trying to pass off Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) as real ones at a vegetable market in the city, officials said. The arrests were made on Friday and the accused were sent to 12 days’ police custody on Saturday. The arrested persons include Dipak Badshah Ramsahay Jatav (21), Umesh Kamlesh Kalicharan Jatav alias Anurag (24), Vikas Janvedsingh Lalaram Jatav (25), Umesh Rajkumar Makundilalprasad Jatav (22), Dharmendra Kailash Ramratan Jatav (22), and Rushikesh Udaybhansingh Shravanlal Jatav (19) – all from different villages in Mehgaon taluka of Bhind district in MP. They were booked on the basis of a complaint by Yogesh Bhikhabhai, Assistant Head Constable of Sola police station. Police seized a total of 247 notes of Rs 500 denomination FICN from them. (Representational) Lucknow: A National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) on Thursday for his involvement in the smuggling of fake Indian currency notes, with the help of the West Bengal-based kingpin of a racket. The court convicted Babloo, a native of Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh, and pronounced three 10-year RI sentences, an official statement said, adding that the sentences will run concurrently. He has also been fined Rs 20,000 each for the offences and will be liable to a further six months of simple imprisonment in case of default. He is the fourth accused to be convicted in the case that relates to the seizure of high-quality fake Indian currency notes (FICNs) by the Uttar Pradesh Police on November 25, 2019, from three accused. The smuggling of items such as narcotics, fake Indian currency notes (FICN) and gold from across the Indo-Bangla border has slumped over the past two and a half months, the period when Bangladesh was undergoing a political turmoil. Data available with the Border Security Force (BSF) reveals that between August 1 and October 15 this year, at least 41,17 grams of narcotics was seized while they were being smuggled into India from Bangladesh, across the international border in south Bengal. The seizure amount was much higher, during the same period, in previous years. In 2022 and 2023 the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier seized around 19,934 grams and 10,602 grams narcotics, respectively. The smuggling of gold also witnessed a sudden dip from 24,980 grams in 2022 and 56,897 grams in 2023 to 20,475 grams in 2024 during the same two-and-a-half-month period.
