Policeman Injured, Tear Gas Shells Fired As Cops, Farmers Clash In Haryana

Chandigarh: A police officer was injured Friday in a pitched battle between protesting farmers and cops in Khedi Chwpata in Haryana’s Hisar. Visuals showed a chaotic and volatile situation; police – escorted by riot personnel in full gear – can be seen taking people into custody while angry farmers surrounded them threateningly, shouting and jeering. The violence – in which tear gas shells were fired and police resorted to a lathi charge, while protesters threw stones – broke after the farmers were stopped from marching to Khanauri on the Punjab border to join thousands of their colleagues who have gathered there, and at the Shambhu border crossing, ahead of a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to demand a legal guarantee for MSP, or minimum support price, and waiver of farm loans, pensions, and ollback of increased electricity rates, among other things. Farmers Protest: Farmers To March On Delhi Again, After Snubbing Centre’s Offer: 10 Points

Delhi Farmers Protest: Farmers have been protesting the MSP issue since the 2020/21 agitation (File). New Delhi: Farmers demanding legal backing for MSP, or minimum support price, and calling for it to include all 23 listed cash crops, resume their march on Delhi today, after rejecting the offer of a five-year contract to buy only pulses, maize, and cotton. Here are the Top 10 points in this big story: On Monday evening farmer leaders snubbed the government’s offer to buy maize, cotton, and three types of pulses – toor, urad, and masoor – at the old MSP. They said it did not make sense as it applied to only a few crops, and ignored those growing the other 18. The farmers said the price – based on the A2+FL+50 per cent formula (MSP at 1.5 times direct costs, such as seeds and fertilisers, and unpaid family labour), and not the Swaminathan Commission’s C2+50 per cent formula (which includes rent for farm land, or the rental value of owned land) – would be “subsistence” payments and not …

Centre’s New 5-Year MSP Proposal. What It Means

Delhi Farmers Protest: Farmers have been protesting the MSP issue since the 2020/21 agitation (File). New Delhi: The deadlock between the government and protesting farmers rolled into a second week Monday, with no definite breakthrough after four rounds of talks but signs of an accord on the horizon. At a meeting late Sunday the government – facing a second round of farmers’ protests, this time just weeks before a general election – relented on the subject of MSP, or minimum support price, proposing a five-year contract to buy pulses, maize, and cotton. The farmers – for whom MSP is a red-flag issue – asked, and were given, 48 hours to confer, and have put ‘Delhi Chalo 2.0’ on hold. A legal assurance for MSP is seen as No.1 on the farmers’ wish list. The two sides met in Chandigarh, with the government represented by three union ministers, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The first signs, though, are not encouraging, with farmer leaders telling NDTV the government must offer guarantees on all 23 crops, and not …

Farmers Protest | Talks positive, focused on crop diversification, aid via NAFED: Govt | Chandigarh News

Diversification, often called  the panacea for Punjab’s agrarian crisis, took centre-stage during the fourth round of talks between farmer leaders, three Union ministers, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday. The union ministers presented a proposal for diversification into pulses, cotton, and maize, assuring farmers of minimum support prices with no quantity limitations. The farmers requested time until Tuesday to deliberate and provide their decision. Stepping out of the over four-hour-long discussion that started at 8.40 pm, Union Commerce and Industry Minister  Piyush Goyal called the talks  “positive.” He said farmers’ leaders raised  various concerns in the meeting, prompting some out-of-the-box  thinking. “They pointed to the  rising desertification in Punjab due to water sources drying up, leading to a discussion on diversification. We discussed how the cultivation of pulses could reduce imports, conserve water in Punjab, and boost farmers’ income,” said Goyal. He said the farmers  in Punjab  expressed interest in growing maize but raised concerns about potential losses if prices fall below MSP. “We proposed a  solution involving cooperative societies like NAFED entering …
